Show TWO TOWNS I WIPED OUT BYBLAZE Eight Cities Threatened Sunday Appear Safe; Winds Die Down MARSHFIELD, Ore., Sept. 28 CU.Rl-rEight Coos, and Curry Cur-ry county cities, threatened all day Sunday by forest fires whjch wiped out the towns of Bandon and Prosper with the loss of at least seven lives, appeared safe today. Favorable winds and all-night battles against the flames which were licking close to the limits of Marshfield, North Bend, Coquille, Port Orford, Gold Beach, Lang-lois, Lang-lois, Myrtle Point and Bridge, bore results and the only danger to the towns today was a possible recurrence recur-rence of Sunday's high winds. Fires were still raging over 10,-000 10,-000 or 12,000 acres of forest lands and most roads were closed. Marshfield was cut off from the north by burned bridges on the Oregon coast highway and from the east when the state highway department closed the Roseburg-Coquille Roseburg-Coquille road because of falling, burning trees. Cities of the two counties telegraphed tele-graphed President Roosevelt and asked an allocation of at least S3.-QOO.OOO S3.-QOO.OOO to rehabilitate Bandon, Prdsper and other fire damaged communities. Not one home was standing in Bandon today, and 1,-600 1,-600 persons were homeless, without with-out furniture, and in many instances in-stances without sufficient clothing. |
