Show Observes Birthday ... Melvin G. Harmer, Springville's only survivor of the Spanish-American War, celebrated his seventy-first birthday birth-day Sunday at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs., Elias Harmer, with whom he resides. Mr. Harmer was one of eleven volunteers, who enlisted en-listed from Springville for service in the Spanish-American War and recalls being in action in the battle of San Mateo, 22 miles east of Manila, P.I., in which General William Lawton lost his life. He was the only American general killed in that war. While in the Philippines, Mr. Harmer was stricken with malaria fever and tropical dysentery and was given a medical discharge. Shortly after his return home, he served as city marshall for two terms and also worked a number of years at the freight depot in Ogden. Mr. Harmer has never married. He Tias made his home in Springville most of the time and in later years has spent the winter months in Arizona. |
