Show A FEW WORDS ADOUT DRY FARMING Considerable work Is being done at tho Utah experiment station along the lines of arid farming Tho station has under its control six dry farms located In the following counties over tho state of Utah Juab Iron San Juan Tooele Sevlor and Washington These farms being thus distributed over tho state makes It possible to test this comparatively now system of farming under varying conditions of climate and soli The data In possession pos-session of the stlltlonl thus collected Is of unllmltcl value to tho men Interested In-terested In dry land farming We have already harvested two crops from these farms either of which would pay I for the land fence and cleir off tho sago plow seed and harvest the crop all In eighteen months or less This Is what has been done on tho dry desert lands of Utah by tho men In charge at the Utah experiment station sta-tion The sumo can bo done by oth ors and Is being done by the rogues slvo farmers When this Is true why Is It that so many farmers are maltIng malt-ing complete failures or at best only a mere existence on their dry farms The answer Is easy Tho average farmer does not take advantage of his opportunities Ho never reads what In being clone by competent men men who arc spending their tlmo In studyIng study-Ing along the very lines he is Interested Inter-ested In And yet much of that which Is published really worth whllo Is Ignored by those It Is meant to help The Agricultural college and experiment experi-ment station are government Institutions Institu-tions which we all help to maintain Tho farmers of the state should Investigate In-vestigate and keep in touch with these Institutions and whenever possible spend a month or six weeks at tho college col-lege studying any of the lines of fanning fann-ing or animal Industry In which they are most interested Special courses have been arranged along these lines for farmers and their sons who are unable to take advantage of tho regular regu-lar training given at the Institution The winter courso opens January 3 and will continue for six weeks Tho entomological department has Just closed u very successful seasons work In spraying against the codling moth One orchard had only 1 percent per-cent of wormy fruit and the other closer to town a little over 2 per cent with two early sprayings This Is the second seasons work on the sapio orchards or-chards and along tho same lines Tho results not only show the value of spraying but emphasize tho fact that from the same treatment better and better returns may be expected each succeeding year The new mechanic arts building is approaching completion By Christmas Christ-mas tho only Indication of having had a fire will be such changes In building build-ing and apparatus as eight or ten years ot experience has proved to bo advantageous Tho Instructors In forging with tho assistance of a few advanced students stu-dents have made all hangers truss rods anchor bolts etc for the new building An Improvised shop for this purpose was sot up soon after the fire and approximately four tons of Iron have been worked up The carpentry department has been busy building now benches tool cabinets cabi-nets and stock racks for the various shops It should ho of Interest to taxpayers taxpay-ers to note tho efficiency as practical workers of students who have had fiom one to three years training In blacksmlthlng and carpentry hero A MrClcllun a last years graduate from the mechanic arts course has accepted accept-ed n position as Instructor in manual tiainlng in the State Industrial School at Ogden R P Findla > bona bon-a third year student has been running run-ning a forge shop at Vest Jordan malting big money He and J W Philips are now working at the car petty trade nt 150 per day Others if thu mechanic arts students have been equally successful n |
