Students watched in awe as the juggler juggled many things including balls, boxes and swords! Courtesy photos WEIRD SCIENCE: Students from Canyon Elementary had fun learning about science from the "Mad Scientist." The "Mad Scientist" assembly was scheduled by the Canyon PTA. Students got to watch and participate in many of the science experiments. In one of the experiments, student volunteers pushed two plungers together to demonstrate that there is low air pressure inside the plunger cups and higher air pressure outside around them. The low air pressure sucked the plungers together. As the students worked to pull them apart, the change in air pressure made a loud sucking noise. Pictured with the plungers are Taylor Hanks and Cole Forbes. KINDY 500: Foothills kindergarten students had the opportunity to "drive" their cars to school. They each took a "road trip" across America to learn more about their country. They stopped at Mount Rushmore and added their faces to the mountain, saw the Statue of Liberty and White House, met Betsy Ross and Abraham Lincoln, and even saw an eagle. OLYMPICS: After finishing a unit on the ancient societies of Greece, Egypt, Rome and Mesopotamia, the sixth-graders at Canyon Elementary held their own sixth-grade Olympics. The students were divided into six teams representing six of the Greek city-states and competed in events such as basketball shoot, long jump, three-legged marshmallow race, tortilla toss, paper plate speed skate and scooter bobsled. Pictured, above, Madison Wilson pushes Sarah Darrington in the scooter bobsled event. MILE HIGH READERS: Kindergarten students and Foothills Elementary were awarded a "Mile High" Reading Certificate for reading an extra 20 minutes during the month of February. S-P-E-L-L-UN-G: Third-grade students at Canyon Elementary have been practicing for their spelling bee. Each class held their own spelling bee and sent their top five finalists to compete in their grade-level spelling bee. The first place winner was Haflie Reynolds, second place was Hannah Webb and third place was Natalie Pendleton. Trophies were provided by the Spanish Fork Rotary Club. This foundation supports Mt. Loafer's wonderful library. The council promised to perform dares if the money was raised. Students were encouraged to raise the money by doing acts of service. A lot of students did jobs around their homes, shoveled snow, tended children and washed cars to earn the money. With the help from the Hughes family and students earning money the challenge was met and the dares were performed! The council did the following dares: Sabe Rees ate a chicken heart, Alexia Van Tassell swallowed raw eggs, Weston Bonny let some girls dress him like a girl, Rylan Christensen dyed his hair all colors, Cameron Killian swallowed a gold fish, Victoria Kokal ate pig's feet, Ellie Cottam kissed a pig, Jessica Losser ate a hot red pepper and the school counselor, Mrs. Bushman, got a pie thrown in her face! Because we reached $1,000, our principal, Mrs. Rudd will have to dress up any way that the student council decides.
