She works with advertising director Dana Robinson in finding businesses to advertise in their paper. She helps to think of ideas for the businesses and also works with the graphic design artists. Whitney listens, observes, follows and thinks of herself as Robinson's shadow. "Having this internship has really opened up many career options for me in the future. It has given me enough experience to know what needs to be done and Dana has helped me out a lot by breaking things down for what should be happening and how I should be doing things. Before Keys to Success Good behavior pays off for SFHS student Christene Choate STAFF WRITER All through the year SFHS students were receiving "Keys to Success" cards for perfect attendance, participating in plays or school events,-' or raising their GPA. On Tuesday, April 29, 2008 they held the final Keys to Success Assembly. Keys to Success is sponsored by Ken Garff, who donates a car to the school. This year Ken Garff donated a Nissan truck. Out of the many who had received cards through the year, only fifty were chosen to participate in the assembly. Each student was given a 'key' to the truck, but only one actually starts the truck. As well as a car, a $ 1,000 is given to a senior who had a "Keys to Success" card. Alaura Mellor was the recipient of this year's scholarship. She was ecstatic as she jumped up and down with excitement. "I can't believe I won;" Alaura said to the audience. While the assembly continued on, Jolly. '' "•'.•' rL "' '""• ":" The Keys to Success program has been around for a while and will continue at Spanish Fork High school, as well as- Salem Hills High school. Each student works hard throughout the year to be recognized and receive a card. Every student wants a new car. Merrill selected for Fulbright program Whitney Henderson starting this internship I was not sure if being involved with marketing and advertising was the best option for me, but after receiving this hands on experience, I now know that this is what I want and I will do whatever it takes to get it." Security Insurance TOP DON Roberta Merrill, Family and ConsumerScience teacher at Spanish Fork High School, was selected to participate in the 2008 Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program sponsored by the Government of Japan. She will receive a fullyfunded three week experience in Japan designed to increase understanding between the people of Japan and the United States by inviting U .S. elementary and secondary educators to visit Japan and share their experiences with fellow Americans upon their return. At seminars in Tokyo, Roberta Merrill participants are introduced to the Japanese culture and HONORING EXCELLENCE AT SFHS Spencer Fausett Senior Spencer Fausett is the son of Steve and Louise Fausett of Salem. He maintains a 3.6 GPA and is president of FBLA and the Guitar Club. His favorite classes include biology and history. Spencer also throws javelin for the SFHS track team. He would like to travel to Australia and New Zealand and would listen to acoustic folk rock. Austin Seanwtw Spanish Oaks Elementary distin Seamons is such a great lid. He exhibits excellence in the [.areas of academics, arts, sports and community. Austin is changing the world by making others "feel good around him" and truly seeking to help others in need. He supports his fellow students Avith academic and emotional needs. He is proof lhat one person, no matter his or her age. can change the world. Austin has a positive attitude towards learning and respect towards others. He demonstrates ionsistent effort in making the a better place. Ultimately, synthesizes a balanced srstanding of himself and the around him. After ten students had tried, sophomore Tyler Jolly got in and started the truck. Participants also visit urban schools, museums, and historic landmarks. They are then assigned to small groups that spend the next several days visiting a particular Japanese city. The participants visit local schools and teachers' colleges, where they interact with Japanese teachers, students, and parents. For many, the highlight of the study visit is a short home stay with a Japanese family. Before the study visit, participants create a proposal for using the information and experience in their classrooms. Mrs. Merrill plans to use the time to expand her knowledge of Oriental architecture, housing, and design issues to share with her Interior Design students. In addition, she intends to observe Japanese families to compare and contrast issues like discipline and care giving options to share with her Child Development classes. The final part of her proposal included gathering information for her Adult Roles and Financial Literacy class by meeting with Japanese teenagers and seeing how they are prepared for life after high school. She will leave June 8 and return June 26. The JFMF program selects four teachers from each state to participate in this program every year. SFHS Band " Spanish Fork High School Band pancake breakfast will be held Wednesday May 21, 2008 from 7:30 a.m.8:40. a.m. at Spanish Fork High School, 99 North 300 West in Spanish Fork. The cost is $5 for all you can eat, pancakes and ham $3, orpancakes for $2. Drinks included (Tang and milk). Please come out and support your Spanish Fork High School Band.:-., |
