"We pay tribute today to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 " said Post Commander John Williams. "And we honor all of those who serve their country, state and community and fight the 'War on Terror.'" WWII veteran Cal McPhie, the event's keynote speaker, spoke of his experiences as a sailor on the U.S.S. Finback, a submarine in the Pacific. One of the many jobs of the submarine or "silent" service was to rescue downed U.S. aviators. One such pilot rescued by the Finback was Lt. George HW Bush. Years later, when then President Bush (Senior) visited Utah, he saw a Finback service pin on McPhie's coat. According to McPhie, Bush asked where he "got that pin." McPhie answered that he served on the Finback when it rescued the former Navy lieutenant. He now gets Christmas cards from both Bush and his son, George W. Past Commander, Thad Jensen, also addressed the audience. According to Jensen, Utah currently has more soldiers deployed than any other state in the Union. "We cannot ever forget our men and women in uniform," Jensen said. "So we must remember 9/11." In addition to honoring those who perished on Sept. 11, the American Legion honored local police, fire and emergency crews for their dedication and service.
