Wolsey STAFF WRITER If you couldn't find a parking space by the fairgrounds last week, there's a good reason why. Last week marked the 84th annual Utah State Junior Livestock Show. Every year youth participants flock from all over the state of Utah to take part in the show. Individuals are allowed to enter two ani• mals, and sell one of them. Ages of participants range from third-graders to high school seniors. Event organizers keep age ranges in mind by dividing divisions into three categories—juniors, intermediate, and seniors. "That way you don't have a third grader competing against a high school senior who has done this for seven years," Show Manager Clay Nielsen explained. Due to the recent destruction of the old bams, the show moved to the indoor arena. Nielsen believes they have plans in place to maintain the same high standards of the show. "We're hoping everyone is patient with us, because this is the first show in 84 years that is in the different arena," Nielsen said. The show ran Wednesday April 30 through Saturday May 3. On Wednesday animals were checked in and weighed, on Thursday animals were judged for quality, on Friday they were judged for fitting and showmanship, and the Sale of Market Stock took place on Saturday. "We usually have 200-250 hogs, 175-200 lambs, 65-75 steers, and about 50 head of breeding beef and 50 head of breeding sheep entered," Nielsen said. Animals are judged in two different categories, quality and fitting and showmanship. "Fitting and showmanship is where you dress the animal up to present him in his best appearance. For example, with a Iamb, how you stand the lamb up in the proper position, walk him around—this depends on how well the individual shows the animal," Nielsen said. Judges pick the overall champions and reserve champions, and also name an additional top ten animals in each division as a championship class.
