The Wolverines' leader will retire after his twenty-sixth season as a Collegiate Baseball Coach. A local native of SF, Gardner was born and raised on the south end of Main Street, which was a couple of ball fields away from the Dons' V ballpark. Being the eldest son of a farmer, he hauled hay and cared for animals at an early age. Gardner's work ethic and athletic ability came from his father Marvin Gardner, who was an excellent athlete that had to turn down a BYU hoops scholarship in order to keep his ill father's farm afloat. The award presentation was a surprise for Degraffenried. D N a m o n Bills EDITOR In a surprise assembly on Wednesday, April 30, Spanish Fork Jr. High Principal John Degraffenried received the Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education. The Huntsman award honors educators throughout the state. Only one junior high principal is selected each year, and ihis year ii was Deg Karen Hunlsman presented to award lo the surprised principal, who thought he was coming lo an assembly to honor SFJH history students. Huntsman said the students should count themselves lucky to associate with this principal and encouraged them to take something from Degraffcnried's dedication to makine a difference. "It's up lo every one of you to make a difference in this world," she said. Huntsman explained that in addition to being honored that day at the assembly, DeGraffenried would attend an honorary dinner in Salt Lake, where he will receive a Irophy and a check for $10,000. See PRINCIPAL-A6 Hales to retire from SF police dept. Lindsay B. Wolsey STAFF WRITER It's the end of an era for the Spanish Fork Police Department. When Sgt. Richard Hales retires on May 15, 2008 it will be the first time in 38 years that there has not been a Hales on the force. Hales worked for four years with the Springville Police Department, and when his dad retired he moved over to the Spanish Fork Police Department (SFPD) where he has been for the last 19 years. Hales is actually a third generation police officer — his grandfather Archie Hales was a police chief back in the w. The SFPD is taking quite a hit with Hales retirement. Fellow officers describe him as a dedicated and experienced officer, and his resume shows it. Hales has worked in almost every division imaginable, ranging from patrol to detective work to narcotics and other crimes.
