Show WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2010 • B l Guardian of Your Community News The inspirations of an artist Marilyn Nielson STAPF WRITER Local artist Josephine Elkins has completed several large paintings for Salem Hills High School, and is in the process of painting two more. The paintings depict several varieties of local hawks, representing Salem Hills' mascot, the Skyhawk. Elkins got an associate's degree at Dixie College and then a bachelor's degree at BYU in a non-art-related field, but she started painting murals 15 years ago, and has been honing her art skills since that time. She now does more of her paintings on canvas than as wall murals, and she has gone back to school at UVU to study fine arts. Elkins said that the largest of her paintings for SHHS is about 6x5 feet in area, and is called "Rising Above the Storm." "I wanted it to be an inspirational image for the students," said Elkins. "It symbolizes our ability to rise above adversity." Another of the SHHS paintings, "Harris Hawk at Mt. Loafer," features the local mountain in the background, and another indigenous hawk, the Harris hawk. "I've learned a lot about birds since starting this series of paintings," Elkins said. "The hawks are all varieties that you see in the skies around here." Other paintings feature a goshawk, which is a smaller bird used for hunting and falconry; a redtail hawk; and a ferruginous hawk, whose name comes from its reddish-brown iron-rust color. Elkins' work for SHHS is not her first experience working for a school. Several years ago she completed a large 15-foot mural for Payson High School, featuring its mascot, the lion. She also painted a picture of a falcon for Foothills Elementary in Salem. In addition to the two hawk paintings still in progress for SHHS, Elkins is currently working on a children's book called "Bruce Gets Loose." Bonneville UniServ's board member, Brent Gordon, honored Candi Bown, Nebo School District audiologist, for her service with Kids Cause during the February School Board meeting. Dr. Bown serves approximately 29,000 Nebo School District students. This includes 310 hearing impaired and all preschool students. She mainly works with the students that wear hearing aids and those with audio processing disorder. Dr. Bown is known across the state for educating parents and students alike about noise induced hearing loss. Dr. Candi Bown graduated from Utah State University with both a bachelors and masters degree. Following her clinical fellowship year at the University of Utah's Ear Nose Throat Clinic, Candi started working as the audiologist for Nebo School District. That was 20 years ago. Bown earned her Doctorate of Audiology degree in 2005 from AT Still University of Health Sciences. Bonneville UniServ serves Utah and Carbon County. Their mission statement says, "To pro- vide progressive leadership, encourage member involvement and promote a positive environment for public education by protecting and advancing member welfare through political activity, community collaboration and the recognition of an individual's worth and right to quality education." One of Bonneville's programs, Kids Cause, has been working in the schools in Utah County for the past 16 years to ensure that all students are successful by meeting their physical, emotional and social needs. Clothing, school supplies, eye glasses, dental care, hearing aids and other needs are provided to students. Currently 16 schools in Nebo District are designated as Kids Cause schools, but any student in the district is eligible to be referred for help from Kids Cause. Dr. Bown said, "I have the best job in the world. I love working with kids and especially enjoy being able to help those with hearing loss. I am so grateful for a great organization like Kids Cause that has been able to help me in that quest." She is married to Brent, and they have three children and one adorable little grandson.
