Show - N E W S A8 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2009 Sophs fall to Lehi Keri Huntsman STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork High School sophomore girls lost to Lehi on Friday night. In the first quarter Lehi led the scoring with 19 points to Spanish Fork's 6. Spanish Fork came back strong, outscoring Lehi by 11 points to end the first half just two points behind, 22-24. But Lehi outscored SF again in the third, 17-3. In the fourth quarter the girls worked hard, but still fell short, scoring 11 to Lehi's 18. Lehi scored seven three-point baskets in the second half. The game ended with a score of 38-59, a disappointing loss for Spanish Fork. Coach Larsen said, "All of Lehi's shots were falling, and we just didn't have an answer. I feel like this game was a lesson for everyone involved. The girls, the coaches, everyone." Jen Huntsman led the scoring with 16, LaShae Peterson and Caitlin Urmston scored 9 and 8 respectively; Brooke Thurgood and Sondra Novak each had two. They are scheduled to play Timpanogos at home on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Slow start dooms Dons Steve Taylor STAFF WRITER Friday Feb. 6, the Spanish Fork Dons had a tough test on their hands — try and beat Lehi on the road. Coming into the game, the Dons were 0-6 in region play, while Lehi sat in a tie for third place at 3-3. The first quarter started out the way last few seem to have started for the Dons, with Lehi getting out to a double digit lead, 16-5, to end the quarter. While the second quarter was closer, Lehi still outscored the Dons 12-10, making the half-time score 28-15. One area where the Dons have done well all year is the third quarter. They didn't disappoint, making some halftime adjustments and outscoring Lehi 18-14, giving themselves a chance heading into the fourth quarter. In many ways, this Dons team has been consistent — big first half deficits, good third quarters, and depending on the game, tough fourth quarters as well. Two games ago, the Dons nearly rallied from a 20-point half-time deficit, chipping Chad Vest / Spanish Fork News EXTRA MILE: Ren Williamsen goes to the hoop against Lehi for two of his nine points. away in the third quarter, and making a big push in the fourth against American Fork; unfortunately, Lehi is better than American Fork. Lehi has relied on a kid with an almost presidential name, Jacob Obioma, to make plays all year, and he did, scoring 17 big points. Lehi clamped down in the fourth quarter, pulling away to win 59-43. The Dons put in a great effort with balanced scoring. Seven players scored, none in double digits, with Ren Williamsen and Travis Still leading the way with nine apiece. The other Spanish Fork scorers were: Taylor Jones 8, Breck Lewis 6, Gavin Hales 5, Chase Loftin 2, Max Johnson 2 and Adam Duke with 2. The loss moves the Dons to 0-7 in region play. They shouldn't hang their heads, though. They play hard, and they are a young team. Only two seniors play, and with a sophomore like Travis Still to build their team around, the Dons will be much tougher over the next couple of years. Lady Eagles Samantha Beck / Spanish Fork News Signing Day: Samantha Beck / Spanish Fork News ALA VS. JUAB: The Lady Eagles hosted the Juab Wasps Thursday, Feb. 5 in their second game in two days. Playing on back-to-back days may have had an effect on the Eagles' performance. They held with Juab through the first, ending down by just one point, 18-19. At the end of the third, Juab led by four, 24-28, but in the fourth the Lady Eagles lost steam and the Wasps pulled away for a 4 8 - 3 5 win. Pictured, above, is ALA's Amanda Tuttle.
