Show B4 • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 2010 Guardian of Your Community News Rees receives grant DFJH holds arts assembly Nebo Education Foundation awarded a literacy grant to Rees Elementary. The Nebo Education Foundation board met in March and approved a grant for $450 to purchase Reading Milestones for the special education classes at Rees Elementary. Doreen Snyder, special education teacher, said, "We are so excited to receive this grant from the Nebo Foundation! In our special education class, we use the Reading Milestones Program which enables students with disabilities to read and comprehend books up to a third grade level. Several of our students have made so much progress they have completed Reading Milestones and are ready to move on to more difficult levels. With this grant we will be able to purchase Reading Bridges which is an extension of Reading Milestones for the fourth and fifth grade reading levels. This program is highly visual and enables students with learning disabilities and autism to demonstrate reading comprehension despite communication barriers that might exist. We also will be able to purchase additional readers to supplement our Reading Milestones program so the students can have their own copy and not have to share the books. Thank you so much for the grant and the opportunity it will give our students to increase their reading skills. We really appreciate your generosity." "Working with The Nebo Education Foundation has opened my eyes to the generosity of our community. People in all walks of life that are concerned with the education in the Nebo School District have donated anywhere from $5 to $ 1,000 or more to improve the education On March 16, 2010 Diamond Fork Junior High held an assembly to celebrate the talents of its fine arts students. The Fine Arts Assembly showcased a wide range of abilities from both the performing and the visual arts. From vocal duets to artwork, this assembly highlighted the finest of the fine arts at DFJH. Drama instructor Kara Poulsen had one of her classes perform a short play they wrote about theatre etiquette. Following this timely reminder of proper behavior, students enjoyed won- of the kids in the community," stated Chris Smiley, foundation board member. These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual "Green Fever" golf tournament held on Tuesday, May 1, 2010, which will help fund even more grants throughout the year. Businesses and individuals can donate as well. You can specify a specific school, classroom or program to donate to. The extra help through additional funding gives Nebo students the advantage of enhanced learning. Other performing soloists were Jordan Snow on the drums and Rayna Bell on the saxophone. Duets were also featured with Hannah Picket and Carolyn Lewis on the flute, and Shaunee Nelson and her teacher Jessica Knight on the guitar. There was also a vocal duet by Nick Mafi and Bryson VanTassle. The entire 7th Grade Orchestra, Junior Chamber Ensemble, Vocal Premier, and the Jazz Band each performed much to the audience's delight. During these musical performances a slide show of the art produced in DFJH art classes was also enjoyed. In appreciation of the event, students and faculty were invited to wear their best dress. Rarely has the student body looked so polished as dresses and ties were commonplace in the halls. Students who participated and attended reported enjoying the experience, and many commented that this was a great way to celebrate the talents of the DFJH student body. One of the best things about Monty is perhaps the continuous smile he wears throughout the school day. No matter what he is doing-plowing snow in the cold morning hours, cleaning up messes, climbing a ladder to hang something for a teacher, or giving a high-five to a student as he passes them in the hall-he is always smiling. His positive and upbeat attitude is contagious! The teachers and staff at Spanish Oaks Elementary agree that their job is made much easier because of everything Mr. Billie does to help. They are proud and thankful to have such a wonderful employee in their building! Need somebody who specializes in smiles? Talk to the Doc! $ 14. 95 includes earrings 1533 N.
