The Dons relied on a strong post game to counteract the excellent guard play of the up-and-coming Golden Eagles. Spanish Fork celebrated a 50-37 victory. Maple Mountain jumped out to a 5-2 lead, led by Jessica Benson with five firstquarter points, but errant passing led to turnovers. The Lady Dons turned up the defensive pressure, creating steals, which led to fast-break points. Spanish Fork scored 10 points in the post and received balanced scoring by Nielsen, Redd and Emerine. The Lady Dons enjoyed a 20-13 lead after the first quarter. Spanish Fork suffered from eight turnovers as Maple Mountain played aggressive man-to-man defense. The Golden Eagles' offense began to click as four players scored eight points in the second quarter. The Lady Dons scored eight points in the paint and switched to a man defense that halted Maple Mountain's scoring run as Spanish Fork enjoyed a 28-21 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles' fast break led to 10 points in the third quarter. Benson scored two quick baskets closing the gap 25-28. The Lady Dons cut down on turnovers and scored eight points with Redd and Emerine working the high-low offense. Maple Mountain had cut SF's lead to 36-31 ending the third quarter. The Don defense stepped up in the fourth quarter with five defensive rebounds and three steals to halt the Golden Eagles' comeback. Gappmeyer scored four of the six Maple Mountain points and the Golden Eagles were forced to foul SF. Brynlie Nielsen iced the game with eight free throws, and the Lady Dons defeated the Golden Eagles 50-37. SF was led by Emerine with 15, Nielsen 15 and Redd 14. Maple Mountain was led by Jessica Benson with 11 points and Gappmeyer with nine. The Lady Dons ran their region record to 6-2. On Thursday the Lady Dons traveled to Payson and the Lions gave them all they could handle. Payson scored the first five points, taking quick shots against a sagging SF zone. The Lady Dons' defense tightened and SF scored five fastbreak points to tie the game 5-5. Spanish Fork's guards scored eight points and SF led 13-9 ending the first quarter. Payson scored 12 points, led by Zeeman with six, while Spanish Fork scored 10, led by Emerine, who played a great second quarter with six points, two rebounds and one assist. Payson played great basketball, pushing the tempo in the second quarter and The Lady Dons were fortunate to escape with a 23-21 lead at halftime. Brynlie Nielsen had six assists, as the Dons racked up nine rebounds and three blocked shots, and the Lady Dons outscored the Lions 19-8, breaking the game wide open with a 42-29 advantage after three quarters. Payson continued to play an aggressive style of ball, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter. Spanish Fork maintained their composure, scoring 11 points, led by junior Kaitlin Urmstrom with six, and the Lady Dons won the ball game 53-45. The Eagles put up a good fight, but Carbon ended up winning the game 48-36. In the first quarter, Carbon quickly gained a 5-0 lead. But soon Sarah Madson drained a three-point basket for ALA. Before Carbon could score again, the Eagles brought the ball back and Sarah Madson made a layup, to tie the game 5-5. By the end of the first quarter, Dalila Rodriguez scored twice, and Wendy Trujillo scored as well, putting the Eagles ahead 13-10. Midway through the \ i second quarter ALA was still ahead, but Carbon was close behind 14-13. Eventually Carbon passed ALA and gained the lead, 17-14. ALA wasn't going to give up the game without a fight, and soon Sarah Madson stole the ball, and got an easy layup. Soon, Carbon had scored again and was ahead 19-16. ALA started to catch up after McKenna Anderson scored, 19-18. Just before the end of the quarter, Carbon made another basket, making the score at half time 21-18. At the beginning of the third, Wendy Trujillo scored and put ALA just one point behind Carbon. But Carbon quickly put up a threepointer, making the score 24-20. ALA fought back and Sarah Madson tied the game 24—24. In the latter end of the third quarter, Carbon was up 30-24. Dalila Rodriquez scored for ALA and made the score 30-26. But soon Carbon scored again to end the quarter up 32-26. In the fourth quarter Carbon established a commanding lead, 46-29. With about a minute left in the game, the score was 48-32. ALA brought the ball down and with one second left in the game Sarah Madson scored, and was fouled on the shot. She missed her foul shot, but Wendy Trujillo quickly got the rebound and scored just before the buzzer, making the final score 48-36. Lady Skyhawks win with D Alexis Richardson STAFF WRITER On Feb. 9,2010, the Salem Hills Skyhawks girls basketball team played a victorious game against the Payson Lions at Payson High School, 40-31. In the first quarter, both teams started out intense with a lot of shots taken by the Lions, but good defense on the part of the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks ended the quarter with an 8 ^ lead. The second quarter made up for the lack of points in the first. The Skyhawks scored 13 more points in the second quarter, and the Lions followed close behind with 12. The second quarter ended with a score of 21-16, Skyhawks. The third quarter slowed down for both teams, but more for the Skyhawks. Both Lyssa Hanks and Hailey Ingram contributed for Salem. At the end of the quarter, the Skyhawks had only made five points to the Lions' eight, but it was just enough for Salem to stay in the lead 25-24. The last quarter was the finisher for the Skyhawks. They came alive, scoring 14 points, thanks to Hanks, Jamiee Hodgson, Ingram, Erika Adams, Amanda Tuttle and Belliston. The Lions were held to seven points this quarter, and the game ended with the Skyhawks winning, 40-31. For the Skyhawks, Hanks and Adams combined for 25 points. This victory was important because it puts Salem Hills in the playoffs. "Our defense was great," said Head Coach Mike Conner. "Our offense wasn't as great, but we won and I'm happy because this puts them in the playoffs." |
