Brady said state and federal agencies will probably cover most of the cost. Brady said that the fire could have done a lot more damage than it did. There was only one injury sustained during the fighting of the fire, one firefighter who hurt his knee. The fire burned directly over the city water tanks and chlorinating system, but all the equipment is still functioning. "There could have potentially been a stability problem, but the fire didn't burn particularly hot," Brady said, "so there should not be added risk for future mudslides in the area." Whiting campground was evacuated as soon as the city received word of the fire. "The road to the campground is very narrow, and we appreciate all the campers who quickly got out of the area without a problem," Brady said. "There were four cars at the top where people were hiking, and they were still about an hour away from their cars," said Brent Seamons, assistant fire chief, who was the first to alert the campers in Whit- Namon Bills / TJie Sentinel SAFETY FIRST: Maceys held their annual Kids Safety Fair Saturday, Aug. 22. While Seamons helped evacuate the campground, the public works department started to get people out from the city water tanks area. "It was a big joint effort, and a lot of folks stepped in to help in a short amount of time." - Brent Seamons Assistant Fire Chief "It was a big joint effort, and a lot of folks stepped in to help in a short amount of time," Seamons said. Brady said the camp host returned Wednesday morning, and the fires were reported to be 75-100 percent contained. The mayor remarked on the stamina and endurance of the firefighters. "They carried 50-100 lbs. up the mountain and are working up to 24 hours without a rest break," she said. She also complimented their organization. ."They are operating under the national incident management system. We are currently getting all the city employees trained under emergency protocol with a comprehensive emergency plan so we can be as organized as they were," Brady said. Also covered in the city council meeting was the amending of the Title 18 development code for political and off premise signs. They discussed the timing of when political signs can be put out and removed, and allowed that signs can be moved up from 10 feet from the property line to three feet, but maintained that there can be no signs put up on public property and public right of ways. Mayor Brady reminded residents to remove temporary signs for weddings or yard sales right away. "Sometimes they stay up for weeks, and that's definitely illegal," she said. The amended ordinance will go into effect 20 days after publication, so it will not effect the 2009 election.
