Covering what matters most We have now gotten to what we have been getting ready for with our menus and recipes: step three - Food Storage Recipe Calculator. This calculator is a little complicated, but it isn't difficult. What it will do for you is to calculate, down to the VA teaspoon, how much you need of each ingredient, from each item you eat, for a years supply of food storage. Of course it won't be very helpful to you if you find out that you need 5,364 teaspoons of baking soda, but don't worry - we willfixthat in step four-compiling ingredients and step five - ingredient calculations. You will be using the recipes that you saved on your computer. It will be easiest for you if you will group your recipes in like kind recipes such as having the pancakes, waffles and crepes on the same calculation page. Same with cakes, breads, soups, etc. The reason is because you want items that use the same ingredients together as much as possible to make it easier for you. Go to the recipes that you saved on your computer, and one at a time, bring them up, highlight the area within the box that says the name of the recipe the amount, unit and ingredient. Copy the highlighted area and paste it to the Food Storage Recipe calculator. (For an example see a www.apreparedhome. com. Go to the Food Storage Worksheet link, under Pages, on the left information bar.) You will notice that once you paste the recipe into the calculator, the columns from EK will automatically fill in. This is where you will need to determine how often you want to eat each individual recipe: one time a month, two times a month, once a week or everyday. Once you have determined that, go to column N and start to transfer the measurement unit and the ingredient. This area is located on rows four and five, starting on column N. Now come back to the amounts that have been figured out and choose how often you will eat it. In this online example we will eat this recipe one time a week (column G). Transfer the amounts under the proper headings starting with column N. In the next example we will be eating oatmeal two times a month (column I). These figures represent a year's use of each ingredient. You will notice that at the bottom of the page, as you scroll down, that all of the ingredients are automatically being added up (again, all of the instructions and examples are at www.apreparedhome. com accessible on the lefthand tool bar). Each page can hold up to 21 ingredients. Make sure that you date and designate each page (Page 1, Page 2, etc.) When you get to this point, you must remember to not mix different, units of measurements An example of this is teaspoons and tablespoons; that will come later. If you have to list an ingredient three times because it is using teaspoon, tablespoon and cup measurements, go ahead and do it. 'Round and About Benjamin Kathleen Olsen Here is the last reminder of Benjamin Days being held this year on Thursday, June 11, at the Benjamin Park. This celebration marks the 113th anniversary since the first LDS ward was formed in Benjamin. Many things have come and gone through the years. Businesses have been started, flourished and then have closed. The one ward has now become two. Families have come and gone although we do still have descendants of some of the original settlers. We have also gained some excellent new families who are great assets to our community, so we have what some call the 'salt of the earth.' Anyways—back to this year's celebration and its schedule: 6 p.m.: Flag raising ceremony (Troop 98) Patriotic speaker: Steve Stone 6:15 p.m.: Children's parade (Primary age, around the path in the park) Tricycles, bikes, floats, or marching along 6:30 p.m. Supper served ($2 charger per plate. Children, 5 or younger, free) 7:30 p.m. (Or when supper is finished) Program featuring local talent 2009's Citizen of the Year announced Other activities will include games for youth and a bake/craft sale. Attendees are asked to bring, if possible, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on (there may not be enough room at the tables.) Also, the people of the community are asked to bring things for the bake/craft sale. And finally—be sure to invite family and friends to join us for an evening of meeting or making friends. We look forward to seeing everyone there. If you have any questions call Blair or Kathleen Olsen or Allen or Pat Swenson. ••• We were beginning to think it would never come—but it appears to be here—summer! With all its many activities, it goes fast so enjoy it while we have it. The gardens and fields are busy doing what they do best - growing things. Already, some of the hay fields have been cut for first crop and somefieldsof grains are already 'heading out.1 Enjoy! Celebrating dairy month There and Back Again Shirlene R. Ottesen Your chuckle for the week: A man and his son were traveling to the bank one morning when they stopped at a corer. The little boy hearing a "Beep... Beep.. .Beep" and asked his dad where the sound was coming from. His dad replied that the sound was coming from a nearby dump truck that was backing up and that sound was to warn people behind it to get out of the way. When they arrived at the bank, the lines were long and so they got into one of the lines be- hind a rather large lady. All 1 cup shredded cheese of a sudden another man's Dissolve jello and sugar beeper started to go off and in hot water.
