Show S Covering what matters most cho WEDNESDAY, MARCH 04, 2009 • B l State art show features local students Namon Bills EDITOR, Springville Museum of Art's 37th annual Utah AllState High School Show is on display now through March 27, 2009. The show is open to high schools throughout the state. A total of 856 entries came in from 85 schools. From those, 379 were selected for the final exhibition, including three pieces from Spanish Fork High School and two from Salem Hills High School. Spanish Fork seniors Riley Hunter, Tyler Lee and Spencer Vance; and Salem Hills juniors Brittany Benson and Sara Callor all have work in the show. ; Lee is the only one of the group who also had a piece in last year's show. He said it's an honor to be included in the exhibit. 'There were 14 people in our school that, entered and only three pieces got in," he said. . The work of the five artists shows a wide range of media and style. Hunter's acrylic painting, "Rooted," was a spontaneous abstraction in response to a bad day. "It was a last-moment thing," she said. "I usually do realistic, so it was kind of nice to do something differ- ent, abstract." In stark contrast, Lee's scratchboard drawing of his dog, "Rui," took 40 hours to complete. "I scratched off each individual hair," he said. "I put a lot of texture into it." Vance's inspiration for his acrylic painting, 'Tickle Fight," came from a dream he had. "I painted a picture of a dinosaur chasing some penguins. The image comes from a memory of a dream I had," he said. Benson's "Thursday Morning" is the lone oil painting from the group. It's an impressionistic still life painting she did this past summer in a studio class at All Things Art in Springville. Callor's acrylic painting, Spencer Vance "The Other Son," is in an abstract landscape. It interprets the sun shining through clouds. Callor paid careflil attention to color choice in selecting the "tonal colors" used in the piece. The All-State High School Show is on display at the Springville Art Museum, 126 East 400 South, Springville. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m-5 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday 3-6 p.m. The exhibit is free of charge.
