Show Covering what matters most A4 • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2008 Lindsay B. Wolsey / Spanish Fork News LOCAL CULTURE: The Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple adds an element of Indian culture to the Spanish Fork area. Krishna temple serves as gathering point Lindsay B. Wolsey STAFF WRITER Chances are you've driven by the Sri Sri Radha Krisna Temple more times than you can count. Or maybe you are one of the thousands of visitors who have stopped at the temple for a tour or services. Either way, when you see the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, you are immediately drawn to its classic Indian architecture. The Spanish Fork landmark was modeled after a famous devotional place in India called Kusum Sarovar (temple on a lake of flowers). The Hare Krishnas have been based out of Spanish Fork, Utah for over twenty years. While to some this might be a strange place to locate, to the Hare Krishnas it makes complete sense. "We feel we get on very well with the community," Temple Manager Vai Warden said. "Our religious standards are very high. When we first settled here, people were a little apprehensive. Over the years they've gotten to know us. I feel we have a good relationship in the local area." The Hare Krishnas devotees are vegetarians, and believe in abstaining from illicit sex, intoxicants and gambling. They mesh well into a predominantly religious community. The Hare Krishnas have about 600 members, with 100 attending regular services. People travel all the way from Wyoming and Nevada to attend services. "We are the only center in this region," Warden explained. The Temple receives thousands of visitors each year. Visitors are welcome to all festivals, and the Temple has daily tours available. There is also a gift store, and a vegetarian buffet. Unlike a traditional cafe\ visitors are invited to donate what they wish, instead of paying a set price. Visitors are also welcome to see the animals, including llamas, goats, and peacocks. "Visitors like the atmosphere; it's very peaceful. Most people come back many times," Warden said. Daily services, class, and mediation from 6-7:30 a.m. The regular Sunday services and feast at 5 p.m. are open to the public. The Temple is open daily from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. for tours, gift apparel, and Govindas vegetarian buffet. Deity Darshan daily from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. For further information, check www.utahkrishnas.com. Their greatest competition was another Utah couple, 'dnd the two partnerships had been'struggling for supremacy at smaller competitions for months. "It just kind of worked out that every-other week we would trade off who won," Dawnika said. "BYU was our week to win." At nationals they found themselves closer than ever before. Each couple won two dances, resulting in an unlikely tie. Dawnika and Loren took first in waltz and cha cha. An obscure rule had to be called on to resolve the conflict, which counts the number of times a couple is ranked second by each judge. Dawnika and Loren won out by the ranking of only two judges. "We decided it was the perfect way to end it, with the tie," Dawnika said. Despite their competition, the couples had become good friends over time. Once the competition was over and the title won, the next big thing was telling Mom. Dawnika's mother, Linda, was reluctantly absent from the competition, due to the funeral of her father. "During the funeral, I was completely focused on remembering my dad. After the funeral and luncheon were over, however, my attention shifted entirely to my daughter and her competition. I bothered my husband so much about making sure he had his phone turned on that he eventually just handed it off to me. When Dawnika called with the news, I was thrilled." Dawnika recalled the aunt whom she was staying with hearing Linda's scream of delight through the phone and across the room. "I expected it," Dawnika and Loren's coach Tresa Anderson commented. She has been teaching them privately for over a year, and with over 30 years of dance and dance teaching experience, including managing Charisma Studios in Springville, she was wellequipped to produce champions. "It's been a great experience," Anderson said, "It's really rewarding to teach kids who are so focused and want to excel ... When I correct them they make the change quickly ... that's why they do so well." Dawnika and Loren were proud to represent their state, their studio, and a year of hard work, but it's about a lot more than competition to them. "Win or lose," Dawnika observed, "it's all about the dancing. It's all about having fun." 9:35 Drillbit Taylor (PG-13) DESIGNER HOME FLOORING WAREHOUSE 1 1 A M .
