Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork SFHS Volleyball B2 • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2007 Secret to Success: From GOLF • B l The Dons are also responsible for taking home three state crowns. It has been some time since they did, but this team is determined to make a solid run, despite being an underdog. SF high teacher John Bingham has been the varsity golf coach for 20 plus years. He gave some reasons why he believes the program has reached such an enormous plateau in match play. "First of all, (we have) a great group of kids," said Bingham. "Many of their families have shown great support of their children even at a young age. Siblings of players have followed in their brother's footsteps and kids are excited because of our tradition here." Coach Bingham also talked about the winning streak and what it means to him and his players. "It's been a neat streak," said Bingham. "Each new team playing for SF realizes the significance of the cham- GotsportsP at The Spanish Fork Hews, pionship streak so they don't want their year to be the one where it ends." There must be some secret as to how his teams have been so consistent with their region reign, but Coach Bingham said the secret is in the simplicity of fundamentals. "Our success is because of the short game," he said. "We focus a lot on hitting from 100 yards out (of the green). We don't focus too much on drives because the short game is where matches are won and lost," he said. It appears that his teams haven't always been flashy, yet they've used good course management. Players maintain their mental focus through repetitious practice, but also by choosing correct clubs to hit more control shots. Sophomore standout Garrett Moss has a good chance to become a state medalist. In just his second year as a Don, he has been the region medalist in back to back years. He's enjoyed playing for a great program. "Coach has done a great job in the two years that I've been here," said Moss. "I'm looking forward to two more years, especially with state this week." Senior Brady Hughes also commented on his experience with Coach Bingham. "He's a great coach," said Hughes. "He helps everyone out with their swings when they're having trouble with it." Hughes has played varsity since his sophomore year and has experienced three region championships. He mentioned the importance of depth as to why these teams have been so successful. "When our one and two (golfers) don't shoot so good, five and six will shoot good and take their scores," said Hughes. So how do these amateurs make other region opponents feel so inferior? "We just come up here everyday to hit tons of different shots and work on our swings," said Hughes. Well, the proof is in the pudding. Practice makes perfect! First, I want to thank Robarge for the concern they have about their customers and their feelings about the work they performed. It is nice nowadays that there are some businesses that take pride in giving genuine service. I was very pleased with the job that they did on our Equinox. It is now like it should be — looking like it never happened. The workmanship of the repair is above reproach. Thanks for a job well done.
