Show THE THUNDERBIRD The State Board of Regents, meeting in a special session Wednesday in Salt Lake City, rejected a proposal that would have added funding in the 1988-8- 9 budget for SUSC and six other colleges and universities of Utah. They voted in favor of a plan, endorsed by Commissioner Rolte Kerr, that provided more funding for the University of Utah and Weber State College. At issue were two funding plans both of which amounted to $397,900 in state funds but differing in the method of allocation to the nine colleges and universities which comprise the Utah System of Higher Education. Under one plan, additional funds would be directed to six colleges (including SUSC) and Utah State University to more adequately address such mandatory cost increases as employee benefits, the early retirement window of last year, operations and maintenance of new facilities. Under this plan, SUSC would have received an additional $22,200. Increases to other colleges would have been: USU, $62,500; BY RAJEEV BHASI "His dynamic leadership, fortitude, and valiant efforts... are in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country." The University of Utah and Weber State College would have lost $110,700 and $28,500 respectively. Arguing for the added funding plan were SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt and USU President Stanford Cazier, while U of U President Chase Peterson and Weber State President Steven Nadauld argued against it. The presidents of three colleges, Doug Alder of Dixie, Orville Carnahan of SLCC, and Michael Peterson of CEU, endorsed the position of the University of Utah and Weber State, even though it meant a reduction in their funding level for next year. As a result of the Regents' vote, only the University of Utah and Weber State College will have sufficient funding to cover their mandated cost increases. All of the other colleges and USU will have to absorb the cost increases from their normal operating budgets.
