The conference is designed to teach beginning and advanced writers, English teachers and college students the techniques of writing and understanding short fiction, poetry and childrens literature. This summers conference will feature William Kloefkorn, professor of English at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln; Herbert Scott, professor of English at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo; Gloria Skurzynski, author of literature for young at the people; and Terry Tempest Williams, naturalist-in-residenc- e Utah Museum of Natural History in Salt Lake City. All four are outstanding teachers and by recognition and awards are outstanding writers, said Dr. David Lee, SUSC language and literature department head and director for the conference. Middle school, high school and college instructors are encouraged to register because the conference will host a daily section on teaching creative writing. Courses will range from childrens literature to methods of teaching creative writing. Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and will be located at the Cedar City Holiday Inn. Participants are advised to attend three of the five available class days. Evening poetry readings will be available for conference participants. Following last years conference, some tabbed the SUSC Writers Conference the finest small conference in the nation. This years will be every bit as good as last years, said Lee. Registration for the Southern Utah State Writing Conference is $110. College credit is available at no additional cost. Teaching workshop set Helping students get off learners welfare is the objective of the Improvement of Language ArtsReading seminar scheduled July 31 - August 4 at SUSC. The seminar is set to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and is designed to help teachers become more effective when teaching students to learn better notetaking techniques and to work smarter, not harder. Topics to be covered by instructors William L. Christen and Thomas J. Murphy include time management, goal setting, decision making, task management, coaching techniques and several notetaking techniques.
