War Memorial Fieldhouse closed SUSCs War Memorial Fieldhouse has been ordered closed by the Utah Department of Public Safety. The Fieldhouse, recently been replaced by the new 5,300 seat Centrum, was cited as having an Inoperative foundation that is falling away, improper fire protection and other missing life safety considerations, said Edward P. Itchon, deputy state fire marshal. The fieldhouse was erected originally at the Japanese Relocation Center at Topaz, Utah, during World War II. It was relocated on the SUSC campus at the end of the war and has been the site of the SUSC basketball games since then. Soil settlement problems have caused the buildings foundations to crumble and sink, making it impossible to open several of the buildings exit doors. The structure also has no sprinkling system or fire alarms. As a result, the office of the state fire marshal has ordered the building removed or extensively repaired, according to college officials. SUSC has announced that the building will be razed and the site used for the construction of a new Student Center. |
