Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MAY 17, 2000 Sports Kanab High scores wel at 2A state track meet By Camberly Brown Seven student athletes from the KHS track team 2000 attended the state track meet held at BYU on May 12-1- 3 in Provo. Seniors of KHS were disappointed that they failed to capture first place gold medals. Coaches Sherida Allen and Ken Brown were elated with the successful results of seniors Daniel Gilberg and Jim Barnes. Friday at the state finals Kanabs Daniel Gilberg captured second place in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6'. (He had hoped for a 64" or better, similar to his Region mark a week earlier, which would have placed him first). On Saturday the 13th, Gilberg participated in the long jump taking a third place bronze medal with a leap of 209". Gilberg was hampered by a pulled hamstring injury he suffered in practice the previous the exchange lane, resulting in the disqualification of the team. Coach Brown expressed his grief and admiration for his relay team. At the time of the hobbled exchange, the team was in second place. r i tional determination and competitive spirit throughout the 2000 season. KHS athletes Derrick Robinson, Amanda Cooper, Ben Alderman and Robert Hansen were unable to secure positions in the finals but they represented Kanab High School well. We have some of the most deserving athletes in our small community of Kanab. We want them to know that we are proud of their efforts. Kanab High School track coaches Allen and Brown feel they had a successful season and want to thank their athletes for their participation Senior high jumper Mikkel Brown was expected to place and score high in the state finals by coaches and her peers, but was unable to attend the event due to complications of a ruptured app- ndix. She was hospitalized at the time of the meet. Her coaches and teammates missed her and her encouraging spirit at the state track meet. Kanabs outstanding sprinter Jim Barnes had a disappointing start in the 100 meter dash finals and suffered his first loss of the season. He was able to make up for lost ground and placed second overall. Vengeance was sweet, however, when Barnes was able to surprise the finalist field of nine sprinters in the 200 meter dash by winning the second place silver. He had only began training for the previous week. Barnes had the best time in his high school career in the 200 meter.
