Winter illness is upon us Marilyn Vermeesch Cold weather is here and, with it comes many illness including colds, pneumonias, sinus infections, etc... A very common virus know as RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), has arrived here in the area. RSV is a cold virus and is the leading cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young By Dr. children. Approximately 100,000 children per year are hospitalized due to this infection. Children at greatest risk are premature infants, those with underlying heart and lung disease and others who are (those on steroids, those with cancer or HIV). Symptoms of RSV are the same as any other cold; congestion, cough, low grade fever. However, RSV seems to cause more congestion than most other viruses. Most children can be kept at home with the usual treatment for a cold, i.e. decongestant, fever reduction, suction of nose and humidity. Some children do not respond to conservative management and require hospitalization. Treatment in the hospital is supportive, that is, oxygen if required, breathing treatments if necessary andor suction of the mucus. Some children develop such a severe infection, they may require placement on a ventilator to help them breathe. Most children recover from this illness with no problems, however, there are some children who will die. There is no medicine to treat RSV, as it is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotics are not helpful. RSV is usually found among school age children less than 12 years of age. With an increase of babies beingdelivered at the new hospital, it is important to reduce outside exposure. RSV in .the hospital environment can be deadly. Not only can it infect our newborn babies, but it can affect people of all ages. Most people older than 4 or 5 years of age develop usual cold symptoms and are fine. However, patients with weakened immune systems can become very ill. Those patient's include patients and the elderly who often have several serious underlying medical problems. For these reasons, visiting restrictions have been enforced in our hospital and nursing home. Children 12 years and younger will not be allowed to visit friends or family in the hospital unless an immediate family member is critically ill. The children would then be required to wear masks, and we ask that they stay for only a short time. These rules are for the protection of patients who are already ill and for the protection of our new post-operati- ve 155 your new FREE Rotation So.
