Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY Community UliB Qbauoui 18V l Here are some tips about radishes that can be used in single or wide rows. Tips that you may not have considered, and might like to adopt. By sowing radish seed with the seeds of carrots, melons, lettuce, parsnips or onions at the same time, they can serve as good row markers for that crop because of their early maturity date of 3-- 7 days. You can then tell where the weeds are, you can pull them out and get a good head start. Radishes act as natural cultivators. When pulled they loosen the soil and leave holes in the ground. These cavities catch water and provide breathing space while allowing the main crop to easily expand. If the soil is heavy the long white icicle radish left in until very large, will provide lots ofroom for other MAY i!i -- - first bugs that usually wait around in the spring to pounce on and munch the very first green shoots that appear. Consequently, the radishes can act as a deterrent to the munching of the main crop and allow it to grow with very little damage. You will lose some radishes this way, but if planted all over the garden with the above various crops, you can still have enough to enjoy with that home-mad- e bread spread with butter, Also, with the season umm-umm-um- just be- ginning, perhaps if we understand what plants need the most of in the way of nutrients, some problems might be avoided.
