Show Vigorous Protests Voiced On Parking Ban By Highland Drive Business Men Highland Strip merchants are up in arms over the passage of of an ordinance prohibiting- parking park-ing on Highland Drive during rush hours. City and county commissions passed similar ordinances at the same time last week. Parking will be prohibited on the east side of Highland Drive and 1100 East from the Sugar House plaza to 340O South from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Parking on the west side of the street from 4 to 7 p.m. will be likewise illegal. Willis G. Carlisle, representing merchants on the strip said that they had been given to understand under-stand such controls would not be made for some time. This indication was given, he said when Highland Drive was widened and black-topped and finished with curb and gutter. Mr. Carlisle said, "We are working to provide off street park ' ing for our customers. However, it will probably be another six months before details can be arranged and the areas put to use as parking lots." Some of the merchants will suffer hardships in the loss of trade, he said. A number of Strip businessmen feel that some shops, such as bakeries, will be virtually driven out of business. Rush hour parking restrictions are already in effect on 500 East, 700 East, 900 East and 1300 East streets. Traffic on these streets moves at a faster rate than it moved prior to adoption of controls. The "No Parking" ban will take effect as soon as regulatory signs are put up. |
