Show I INDEPENDENT SUGAR HOUSE, UTAH. THURSDAY. JULY 9. 1959 PAGE THREE Legend of Sugar Mill , 'A A ' r Pictured above is the "Sugar Mill" which stood on the south east corner of 11th East and 21st South intersection until 1928. In 1849 Brigham Young sent Apostle John Taylor to France to study the manufacturing of sugar from sugar beets. When Mr. Taylor mastered the art, he ordered the machinery from Liverpool, England. It was shipped to St. Louis and then under the supervision of Elias Morris brought to Utah over the plains in 50 carts pulled by oxen. Abram O. Smoot built the plant on Kanyon Creek (Parley's stream) and operation started on February 1, 1855. "Sugar House" Gets Its Name At a general council of the Saints, April 23, 1854, suggestions for naming the fast growing area were requested of the assembly. Margaret L. McMeans Smoot, affectionately known by everyone as "Ma", called out "Sugar House" after the sugar mill then being constructed. This name is strictly Utah and has no duplicate, as many a nostalgic traveller will attest. i UHKflHftF 1b The Letter To Editor . Editor: I think I am the oldest one in ( Sugar House.
