Show lt'N mta oorts Wednesday September 29 2004 Sanpete Messenger Sanpete B1 Valley Edition Messenger-Gunniso- n Win is no real surprise Manti remains Olympic Gold As Ephraim resident Jack Anderson once said “It only takes one time to make a memory” That being the case the 2004 Olympic games spoke volumes and should provide enough inspiration to last a lifetime I will never forget as a high school swimmer the 1972 games in which Maik Spitz won seven individual gold medals That was and continues to be an inspiration to me My family stayed up late nearly every night during the 2004 I was pleased to discover that games to watch the competition the United States athletes with the possible exception of the men’s basketball team set shining examples for our future Olympians both imagined and real men’s basketball and Even the team taught a valuable lesson With the to steal a phrase from Will Smith the team went on to lose more games in one year than the US has lost in the entire history of the Olympics The lesson was taught by Lisa Leslie of the women’s team She said the men could learn something from watching the women play namely that there are other and better ways to move the ball than dribbling It might be a good idea to use all five players on the floor occasionally I was impressed by US sprinter Justin Gatlin who was so honored by being able to compete that he said “I just want to breathe the Athens air’’ He went on to w in a gold medal I’ll never forget Paul Hamm who taught us to “never give up” He almost literally landed in the judge’s lap in the early Everybody thought going of the men’s gymnastic competition he was out of the running but he came back to give the performance of a lifetime in the remaining events to w'in the gold to the US Olympic committee for interCongratulations cepting the request to have him surrender the gold because of a mistake on the judge’s part Also congratulations to swimmers Markus Rogan of Austria and Razvan Florea of Romania After being fairly and soundly beaten by Aaron Piersol in the backstroke they refused to allow the Olympic judges to strip Piersol of his gold for an “illegal turn" The swimmers knew better and behaved better than the judges Michael Phelps got a lot of hype He was touted as the man that was going to better Mark Spitz by winning eight gold medals Although Phelps would have loved to win eight golds his expectations w'ere not the same as those of the press The only disappointment I felt w hen he didn’t win eight golds was when some of the press said it was a disappointment This young man showed what being a champion is all about when he gave up his spot on a relay team so a teammate could win a medal of his own Watching the Olympics with my family is one of the highthat knows lights of the sports year for me I have a what to look for in a gymnastic performance and I have enough great memories to last another four years undefeated with victory over Richfield By Bob Bahlmann Sports Editor RICHFIELD - If a football team gams nearly 400 yards in total offense and forces two turnovers you’d expect them to come away with a win That w as not the case last Friday as the Richfield Wildcats played their best game of the year and still lost to the Templars Both teams had a case of early on On the third first play possession Richfield coughed up the ball and Manti’s Jace Moore recovered Two plays later Manti returned the favor but then got the ball back when Tyler Gunderson pounced on another loose ball BOB fumblc-iti- s of their near Manti had enough and Templars Chans Lund (No 53) Richard Newton down a Richfield ball carrier Templar quarteiback Taylor on picked up the ground before connecting with Devin Frischknccht and cap- ping the drive off with a seven- yard stiike to Aaron Hansen for (No BAHLMANN Gunnison guard Jack Pay (62) leads Joey Crane loss quarters on their way to a Richfield foiccd another Hie seesaw started swinging then as the Wildcats went for 79 yaids on thiee plays and pro Do you have pioneer ancestors w'ho came across the plains before May 10 1869?
