Dr. West the Dentist has returned home and can be found at his office ready to do all kinds of Den tal work. It is reported that a man in Salina became suddenly insane and killed his wife la ;t night, but as no names were tne.itioned, we do not know how true it is. The dance in Peterson's hall for the benefit of the club, was a grand success. The Ball players dancing in their uniforms, the gypsies in theirs and the girls who were selling ice-cream, made it cpuite a fantasia. Mr. Clemensen a member of the Mt. Pleasant Liberal Band, was in town yesterday. It is his irsl visit to Ephraim, but to judge from the way he watched some of the girls it will not be his last. Last Sunday there was quite an exciting time at the gypsy camp. One of the workmen on the depot got his face and neck scrached con- - derably, by the whole camp both woman and men taking part in the fight. j The Ephraim Drag Store is the place to get a good cigar. It had be-gun to be supposed that Ephraim was not in it this season, but the way her club waxed the Manti boys was a caution to cold weather. The result was Ephraim 12; Met-ropolitans 5, five innings. Pyramid. A CARD I was very much gratified that the notice relating to my withdrawali rom the Register appeared in the last issue of that paper, although it might have, been couched in more courteous terms. The two gentle mtn who composed the article pro- - test that they ment nothing offen- - j sive by their manner of expression, and knowing their probility, I am bound to take their word, but at Jeast tht public should be more 1 discriminating J avail myself of their kind iavitatipn to state the i case from my own stand point. In i the first place I wish it understood that I have had nothing to do with the last 6 issues, and that although i convinced that Ephraim needs a paper worse than any other town in I San Pete County, I should have re- - I signed six months since but for the I confidence reposed in me by certain I men who put money into the paper I with the understanding that I would I carry it through lot at least one I year. This I have done, and when , the Company pay me what is, due I trust we shall part friends, i Coming into San Pete practically I without capital to engage in the I hazzardous enterprize of publishing a county paper, I go out having no ' rnore means than when I came The rtsult of six years unrcmitt-i- 1 ing and consciencious effort being that I have neither filled my purse, I nor improypd my reputation for ; proficiency in news paper work, in f a vain attempt to "make bricks A without straW." I think I can say I without a suspicion of egotism that I have done more to place San Pete County's resources on a proper I footing with the rest of the Terri-- t tory than any one man, and no honorable man has impuncd my i motives, character or intecritv. '1 x In tonclusion I will say that there j', are many who predict the early death of the Rspister, but I hon-estl- y hope all who are iu tympathy i' witjti its principle, and policy, wil ! rally to its suppurt, and will not j "permit such a catastrophy; and let ' it no longer be said that Salt Lake . ! iiy does more toward supporting J i the paper, thn1 does, Ephraim; and the gentleman who have assumed , '. charge has my respect and best ? Irishes for entire success, j ? To my many friends I take this ' opportunity to say, we shall meet again under more suspicious cir-- ; furjastances. ? James T. Jakeman. Last Saturday afternoon Manti Base Ballists came to the solemn con elusion that they would come to Ephraim and make their final strug-gle for championship. They suc-ceeded, but, with no more honor than when Ephraim went to Manti, and were accused of catching them napping. Manti had their full team excepting one, when they were de-feated, but Ephraim had only one of (heir new nine, to play with them, and were as easily beaten last Satur-day as Manti was 'on the fifth month and 14th day of the nianth.V Yesterday afternoon a number of B. Y. A. students residing in Elsi-nor-and Ephraim challenged the Ephraim nir.e to playaa game of five innings each, and were very cleverly defeated. The first two innings were played with one score in favor of Elsinore, but, when Mr. Greaves our pitcher steped iu the box, confidence was soon restored and two white washes in succession were in order, The B. Y- - A's were so confused, that their playing was very wil t f so uncertain was the pitcher that the umpire received an ugly wound from a foul. At the close of tht game the score Stood if to 10 in favor of Ephraim. |
