Show "Robbing Peter to pay Paul" is an operation that may satisfy the debt owing to Paul, but it can only be done at the unjust expense of Peter. So it is with our protective tariff. It was designed to enable the American manufacturer to charge higher prices for his products pro-ducts than he could otherwise have charged, but any law which enables him to do so, necessarily forces the consumer to pay higher prices than he otherwise would have to pay. A protective tariff robs the people, everj' one of whom are consumers, to pay the steel trust, and the sugar trust, and the food trust, and the coal trust, and the hundred other trusts which are to-day controlling the markets of the whole country, and fixing the exorbitant and arbi-trary arbi-trary prices which the consumer is forced to pay.
