The late Prof. Virchow, the eminent German physician and scientist, had a high notion of American doctors and- American medical scientists generally, gen-erally, reports the Chicago Inter Ocea.n. When interviewed some time ago the professor said, in the course of the conversation, that several young mccMcal students, from the United Slates had passed through his hands whose attainments were certainly on a very high level and' whose brightness bright-ness and alertness could not be excelled. ex-celled. "I have a great admiration of American Amer-ican surgery," he added. "The men in America are as good a-s any we have here in Europe and in some departments depart-ments they are better. I do not. think, though, that the American specialists are as good as the best men in London, Paris, Herlin and Vienna, but they are making big strides. No penurious spirit rules the United States. Everything Every-thing is on a large, liberal scale, and the splendid university endowments there are bound to tell in the near fut ure. The American laboratories are excellently equipped and the students stu-dents have enormous advant-ages over those who study at some of the inadequately in-adequately equipped school In Europe." |
