Dear Editor: On April 16, nine students and two teachers from an international school in Santa Fe came to Monticello High School to exchange ideas and learn about each other's culture. The student visitors were natives of Mexico, Germany, Finland and Brazil. The school they attend focuses on world consciousness. When the international .students mentioned they are vegetarians, some vocal lo- students decided being vegetarian is synonymous with hating cows. The resulting verbal harassment cal and lack of respect by a vocal few left an unforgettable impression of Mormon rural America on the international students and their BES talent show E e m e n t a ry and ng w students ill show off their B 1 i 1 talent tomorrow night. The saddest part of all is that these same visiting students made the same presentation in Moab and at Halls Crossing and wore treated with respect and interest. When the international students debriefed the hurtful experience at our home, it was astonishing. They did not judge the narrowness and ignorance as I might. They expressed sorrow for the outspoken few and fear for the world. They looked at themselves and asked how they could have better presented their ideas so as not to bring out fear in others. The visitors were left with this parting impression of Monticello. As they were getting into their cars to leave, two boys riding bikes in the street shouted "Tree huggers!"
