Show I Churches Scottish Bagpipes to Play At 1st Presbyterians Kirkin O th Tartan Residents of Salt Lake Cit living in the vicinity of South Temple and C Street may be awakened to the sound of Scottish bagpipes Sunday as members of the First Presbyterian Church celebrate the Kirkm 0 th Tartan on Reformation Sunday at 11 a m The annual celebration recalls the Scottish hentage of the Presbyterian Church according to the Rev Donald H Baird pastor of First Presbyterian Church 12 C Street The public is invited and is encouraged to wear Scottish tartans and kilts despite their nationality To Play Outside This year a bagpipe player will play outside the church beginning at 10 30 a m The service will begin with a grand procession led by the hurch s minister of maintenance The Rev Mr Baird explained the t hurch s janitor ha-- been elevated to a minister of maintenance to pick up on the traditional role of the sexton in the European churches In the old country, the sexton would lead the procession down the aisle of the church, oppn a gate leading to the altar, open the scriptures then hold the gate open for the clergy to attend the altar That tradition will be carried c - on Sunday Part of the Procession Sunday, the acolytes will follow the minister of maintenance Then the American flag, the Christian flag, the Lion Rampant flag (the royal flag of Scotland before the union of England and Scotland) and the St Andrews Flag will be brought into the church Following the flags will be On two banners representing the Scots Confession and the Westminster Con fession, followed by a 1U member bagpipe band the choirs and the c ler- - gy The bagpipe band will play during the worship service, the Rev Mr Baird said pointing out the church s sanctuary, with it high ceilings and gothic structure lends itself well to such displays But more important than the pomp is the fact the service is being held to reaffirm members commitment to Jesus Christ the Rev Mr Baird said In each bulletin will be a swatch of a tartan to symbolize each family s commitment to Christ The Rev Mr Baird said that in Great Britain outlawed the wearing of the Scottish tartan but each clan leader would carry a swatch of their family s tartan to church under their clothing At some point in the service the minister would bless each family and the Scot would, at that time, touch their tartan swatch With no outward sign, an underground Kirkin occurred The ceremony, although ancient, was not held in America until April 1745, at Washington DC's New York Avenue Presbyterian Church Its minister, the late Peter Marshall, was then Chaplain of the U S Senate and Washingtons St Andrews Society Since then, Kirkin ceremonies have been held throughout the coun27, 1941 try Todays Kirkin is a reaffirmation of the family spirit of the church, the Rev Mr Baird said Marriage Encounter to Teach Couples Better Communication Good communication between a husband and wife is the whole idea behind Marriage Encounter Couples who have gone through the weekend will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Marriage Encounter in Utah on Nov 10 with a day of activities under the theme Where Has the Dream Taken IV The 10th anniversary celebration will be held at St Vincent Churchs social hall, 1375 Spring Lane (5000 South), with registration beginning at 12 30 p m The program will feature a review of the last 10 years, including how participants of Marriage Encounter have grown and changed Following the program, a Mass will be said in St Vincents Church and a 6 30 p m dinner and social hour is planned Mari lage Encounter was started in Spain in the early 1960s by the Catholic Church It was a way of saying that marriage is a sacrament, according to Sondra Aggeler, serving on the 10th Anniversary Committee, who explains couples going on a Marriage Encounter Weekend should have a good, stable marriage Marriage Encounter was never meant to solve the problems in a bad marriage, but to strengthen good marriages through communication, she emphasized During a Marriage Encounter Weekend couples learn to pray together and to bring the scriptures into their lives, Mrs Aggeler said 4 Founder of Center To Address S. L. Christians The Rev Richard Benjamin founder of the Abbot Loop Christian Center, Anchorage Alaska, and his w ife Carol, will be the guest speakers at the Salt Lake Christian Fellowship, 1952 E 7000 South, beginning Saturday The Rev Benjamin founded the Christian Center, which has since grown into more than 50 outreach churches, including the Salt Lake Christian Fellowship Mrs Benjamin is the author of the book The Rib Section She explained many couples sign up for their first encounter weekend with the mistaken belief the weekend will be a chance to get away from the kids and party Instead, the weekend is filled with group discussions and private times for a couple to work on improving communications with each other Since Marriage Encounters inception, several other religious groups have adapted the original Catholic version to their own beliefs In Utah, members of such diverse groups as the Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Jews, Methodists and Lutherans have joined the Marriage Encounter family The Jewish program is the newest in Utah So far, 2,500 Catholic couples have gone through the Catholic expression of Marriage Encounter, while 150 couples have gone through the Lutheran expression, 700 couples through the Episcopalian expression, 50 couples through the Jewish expression, 300 through the Presbyterian expression and 175 couples have gone through the Methodist expression All couples who have been through any of the Marriage Encounter expressions may attend the afternoon activities Besides spilling over into other faiths, Marriage Encounter has" emerged in other encounters There is now an Engaged Encounter, for engaged couples, a Parish Encounter, in which parish members examine themselves and others in the parish, and Retorno, a strictly spiritual weekend where couples learn to pray together Meets Murray PatV Home 5103 South State in 9 30 a 0 30 a LEW HANCOCK For information first phone CHURCH Minister 561 7930 352 E or Suriljy eryi &s tiy Sdwyig'Ukrd local grocery stores and bakeries, day-olproducts and the Huntsville monestary, which donates the eggs Funds for food not included in the donations come from the United Way, St Anns School donates the coffee Catholic which donate d Community Services provides funds for operating expenses, the volunteers to cook and serve the meals and the facilities W An A lull lino up ol ministry lor your family' Spirit llllad worship praaching' and leaching Jamas E Church of Religious Science (Science of Mired SANDY UTAH EARIY WORSHIP SUNDAY SCHOOL exciting growing fellowship!
