Its also a movie about how love can be infinitely more important than the facts. And its a movie about a moment postwar Vienna, filled with rubble and displaced persons and vast empty monuments. Everything about toe movie is stylistically exaggerated. The director, Carol Reed, for goes expressiomstic, e effects; an old balloon peddler casts a shadow 50 feet high, and Orson Welles flees through a sewer system that looks like the catacombs. Trevor Howard, as the British officer, looks 50 percent too British to be true. The girl, Valli, is the ultimate expression of blind love; the fnend, Joseph Cotten, not only finds himslf adrift in an alien city, but finds himself photographed (as everyone does) in obsessive tilt shots: nothing is on the level here. Scene fter great scene pours from The Third Man: that moment in the giant fer-ri- s wheel when Welles and Cotton stand beside the open door; Welles speech about the Swiss and their cuckoo clocks, the man with his dog; and, of course, the final long-sho-t, held almost forever, in which the story comes to its unbearably sad, totally inescapable, conclusion. n larger-than-lif- The opera house shot in ending with the stagehand holding his nose is one. Its no only visually brilliant, its a bedramatic thunderbolt cause Welles plays a man named Harry Lime, and we thought wed already attended Limes funeral. The Third Man doesnt make many lists of the greatest; films of all time, but it wilf always be on mine. Its masterpiece of style, of acting,- of the capturing of the moment when postwar Europe wa gnawing at its own soul. And it had the good fortune to possess perhaps the most perfectly matched score of any Third motion picture: the and the other Man Theme zither music by Anton Karas.
