Show ps The Salt Lake Tribune FAMILY Sunday, May 2, 1999 they need. For hard-to-plant places in the garden, try vines or ground covers. Vines can be used to soften the harsh architectural lines of a building, bring privacyto patio or porch, cover unsightly areas, screen unpleasant views and addinterest to fences or retaining walls. They will not take as muchspace to plant as a shrub. Vines can be annual or perennial. Wisteria, a perennial, is a showy vine, with great clusters of purple or white flowers. It will need good support, forit grows large and heavy. Whenplanting wisteria, add humus to thesoil, such as GARDENING screened compostor peat moss. It prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil. Thelace vine, with its panicles of white dainty flowers and dense foliage, is excellent for screening. It has a nice fra- grance. Ivy can be used either as a climbing vine or ground cover. Whenyouplant ivy, give it a couple of years to make good growth. It is lovely on walls or covering bare spots on the ground. Ivy thrives in semi-shade and well-drained soil. To give privacy to an outdoor dining area, plant a grapevine. It will cover a fence with beautiful foliage, and in the fall, the fruit is colorful and edible. Bright purple concord grapes are especially attractive on tall fence. For bright color in the fall, try Virginia creeper. Its green foliage will turn a beautiful red, plus it has large, dark sand to the soil and humus. Whenplanting, set the crown ofthe plant just below the soil surface. Shade it for a while af- ter planting and water thoroughly. You can prunethe late-flowering types back each year asthey will bloom on new growth Early-flowering varieties should not be pruned except to remove dead stems. Mulch around the roots to keep the plant cool andto protect it over the winter. Ground covers are as versatile as vines. Plant them on a steep hillside where nothing seems to grow, or in a shady or moist spot. They are easy to plant and requirelittle maintenance. You simply need to mow mostof them about twice a year to keep them neatand attractive. The taller types can be shaped by pruning. Give them balancedfertilizer in the early spring and again in the blueberries. fall. Follow directions onthefertilizer If you want to attract hummingbirds, plant a trumpetvine, which has lovely cut foliage and trumpetlike flowers of orange-red or yellow. The seed pods are package. It has blue flowers, foliage in rosette form and grows to 8 inches. It will grow in sun, semi-shade or deep shade. Giveit rich soil and space the plants about 8 inches apart. Creeping Jennyis a evergreen perennial that has attractive round and glossy leaves and lovely yellow blooms. It does well in a moist location so is excellent near poolor stream. Take a walk around your yard, back to your vegetable or flower garden, and ask yourself if the garden feels connected, visually, to your house. Now, before you are distracted by lush foliage and splashes of flower color, is a good timeto assess such unadornedessentials of a landscape. If some connection is lacking, it can be provided, visually and physically, with a path. The path itself can be an integral part of the design of your yard. A formal air comes from straight paths Curved paths, whichare informal, are no less suitable for tying together a land- balance in a formal setting is with a mirror-image planting. In the informal garden, no need to match plants on either side of the path, but balance the total visual impact. Take into account plant sizes, shapes, colors and textures. For example, a large clump of shrubs could be balanced by an expanse of lawn, some largerocks or a single largetree. Note also how straight path leads you along quickly. The smooth curves of an informal path tend to slow you down in walking or viewing. Not that you haveto be hurried along a straight path, because wide pathsalso invite slower strolls. An You might want something prominent — perhapsa sundial underplanted with bright flowers, or a garden bench — at the endof a path. If you can see the end of the path, have somethingthere worth seeing or going to. An informal path, on the other hand, might curve out of sight, drawing along footsteps or imagination. The sound of unseen water is a good lure A well-placed path also provides firm, dry ground on which to tread out to the garden to drop the first seeds of the season into warm ground.
