Show SMDOT DUHGH PICKS " LEGISLATIVE TICKET Slate Chosen to Bolster State Congressional and County Nominations WANT CONTRIBUTIONS Independent Republicans Among Those Who May Be Given Places Realizing the weakness of the state congress onal and county t ckets non nated at the mandate of Eeed Smoot and his 1 eutenants the '-moot forces wlo aprear to be n control of the Be publ can organ zat on ba e dec dej, upon a leg slative ticket wh ch to those who p eked the candidates appears to lend strength to the Smoot ticket in the county and bring to it the support of the former American party voters who were d sgusted at the tickets uoin mated thus far by the femoot bunch Ha ing secured all of the lucrative pos t ons on the t ckets thus far named the Smoot outfit is w 11 ng to concede to the independents the leg slative po sitions which really call for sacrifices On the part of those who are elected rather than rewards One of the principal objects to be de sired by the ''moot men 13 campaign contributions By nominating the can didates on whom they have decided, the bosses of the Bepubl can part) hope to kill two birds with one stone They want to br ng back the support of the independents which has been al enated by the arbitrary act on of the Smoot forces in' all of the conventions held thus far and they want to get the usual contr buttons from the breweries and the liquor interests All of those on the femoot legislat ve slate are Btrongly opposed op-posed to proh bit on Convention September 18 The legislative convention will be held at the Garrlck theater on September 18 At this convention will be nom nated two candidates for state senator and ten candidates for the lower house of the state legislature. Of those who are at present serving as members of the sen ate and lower house the Smoot crowd will choose the ones most acceptab e and eliminate others For example the two senators from Salt Lake count whose terms expire are Benner X. Smith and W N Williams Mr Smith s opposed to prohibition while Mr Williams is a prohibitionist Mr Smith will probablv be nominated while Mr Williams will be eliminated. Certain prohibitionists from this county now serving in the lower house win be left at home Here is the slate settled upon ester day For senators Benner X. Smith Ben L Rich For representatives Harry B Cole Margaret Zane Wltcher Cherdron Pa ley P Jennon. Daniel McRae Frank L. Hlnes Henry Rawllngs David Cook H Wells Culmer John Dunn. Claude T Barnes. The bunch has decided. upon this ticket but it is not insistent upon It in Its en tirety Clarence Bamberger O J a is bury Jr and C g Marks all pos b e or avowed candidates for state senator would be acceptable to the bunch To keep a targe and Influential element of the party in the line, the bunch wou d even be willing to accept Harry S Jo sepb whom thev recently defeated for the congressional nomination Possible Changes An effort is being made to Induce J C Lynch to consent to be a candidate for the lower house Should he agree to ac i cept the nomination be will be nominated j practically by acclamation and the bunch will gladly eliminate one of their earl er selections George A Marr John A Beck Jr Annie Wells Cannon and Oeorge N asson who are possible candl dates for the lower house are also an ceptable to the former federal bunch. Of the senatorial candidates on tbe bunch slate Benner, X. Smith Is at pres ent a member of the state senate He has frequently been mentioned as a congres alonal candidate but the Smoot outfit prefers to keep him In the senate. If elected to the senate this fall he w 11 undoubtedly be chosen pres dent of the next senate. Ben L.
