The "King's Daughters" Will Revise Their Oonstitution-- St. Louis Wel-comes DclogatcB-Oth- er News. Nr.w Yoiik. April 10. Speeial.J-T- he National Fast Telegraphing tour-nament, which began today in Hard-ma-hall on Fifth avenue, is attracting a good deal of attention. The audience at the contest this afternoon was large, and evidently much interested. The competitors are numerous, as the prizes tillered are sufficiently valuable to in-duce rapid telegraphers from all over the country lo enter the list. The fol-lowing experts have been selected as judges: W. P. Phillips of the United Press, Thomas K. Taltaville of the Klec-tri- e Age, George K. llolbrook, K. T. Howell, ami George II. Usher. W.J. Johnson, editor of thoKleetrieal World, acts as lime-keepe- and C. W. Price of the Electrical Review as starter. The tournament is under tho management of Fred Catliu of the Western Union central office. One section of class A is competing this afternoon. The other section will test .their skill tonight. ' Tho ladies' class began .their contest at . 1 :,I0 and they were followed by the "Old Timers.'' who were in the telegraph prior to lWiK. The exhibition is both novel ami in-teresting. Instruments have been placed in all parts of the hall so that everybody may hear, Tho contestants send from the stage, ami from that fact the question of "nerve" w ill have much lo tlo with the result. This is the lirst lime that the ladies have beeu given an opportunity to show what they can do. Tho number of words to be sent has been reduced lo 250, as the entries are so numerous there would not be time for each one to semi 500 words. It is claimed by some that a 250-wor- d test is too short; that it is not a true test, be-cause many of the fast men do not owe their reputations for speed to "sprint-ing." A man of the caliber of Palsy Burns would probably make a better average for an hour than for ten min-utes. In a trial in ltWiH Burns sent 2731 worths in an hour, anil bis record has never since been equalled. There, have been tournaments held here before, but lliey were not national affairs; only men from the city 'participated In them. Three of them have been held anil very fast time was made tit each of them.. mm .ill il i Trva Tom Own UN Ona Hair and the (onlrary Rrpurt I. I. dtlftHj Ineerrert. THE OFFENDING REPORTER FIRED. A story eonies to this city from the village of Oronoco, ten miles north of here, which for sensation and romance is not ofte 1 equalled in natural life, but par-takes more of the uaturo of the fancied tale of a novelist. It is related a fo-llow: Last Sunday morning al about o'clock, n g young couple came to Clark's hotel in Orouooo, say-ing they were mail ami wife, ami ap-plied for lodging. Their team was reeking with sweat and tlioir buggy plastered with mud. The landlord, having his suspicious aroused by the general condition of affairs, questioned them closely, and they seeing that they were suspected and becoming sensible of the folly of the course which they were then pursuing, toM him their story. They were eloping; and intended nothing wrong in representing them-selves as they did. but that the lateness of tho hour forbade them ohhduing tL--e services of a minister, ami that it seemed them there was no oilier way of ob-taining shelter till morning without arising suspicion, which they wished to avoid. That if a minister could bn oh tallied they ery much w ished to be married at once, for they greatly feared the pursuers would be on their track and that the morning would see them appear. Although it, was 2 o'clouk in the morning, Mr. Clark yielded to the tearful entreaties of " the girl ami the 'solicitations of tho young man and conducted them across the river to the house f Jitslico of the Peace N. Riefsiihler. 'Tho yt lllig man had obtained a license, ami they swore an oath that they were of the rctp.ii.slto age. The justice saw iw reason why he should not marry them as they request-ed, ami the ceremony was duly per-formed al 2 a. m. Sunday. ' Tliev continued their lliirhi on Sun- - day, ami art: said lo have taken the train on the Milwaukee road for Chi-cago. The groom's name is William Poole. He is a resilient of Wabasha county, is about 22 years obi and has a somew hat checkered and shady past. He shot one Strickland in Wabasha county some three years ago. for which he has been lining time al Stillwater penitentiary ami was only released about two weeks ago. The britle's maiden name was Anna MayWyatt. She is 1H yeaiy old and very comely of face and liguro, ami up to the time of her, present escapade lived with her folks iu Wabasha eouuly, who are very nice people, her father being a well-to-d- fanner. i , The engagement of the young couple antedate Poole's lnearnati, jat Still-water, ami the girl's relatives having fears," which the subsequent results proved to have been fully warranted, had taken great pains to prevent her from meeting Poole on his return. Poole went lo Wabasha Saturday ami took out a license, and the Might was made about I) o'clock that, night from a card parly, which the two went intend-ing ut n neighbor's house. They drove twenty miles through the mud to Oro-noco, arriv ing there, as has been stilted, at 1 a. iu. Sunday. The government is at its wits mill, and the country amused at (irst, is fast growing disgusted ami indignant.
