Mr Arlingstall also makes a few suires' tions as to how the site could" be reached. The report was received by President bage and he immediately sent for the committee, and the contents of the document were devoured. What was in the report was apparently of a very satisfactory nature to them, for thev seemed much phased alter they dad discussed it fully. They were' each very reticent, however, and refused to make tho contents of the report public "lou can say that the fair will be held on the Lake Front" was all the infor-mation their spokesman, Director Wal-ler would extend. IIB0N& DBIHK HIS WEAKNESS. fjiilj Crazed With the Product of the Gin jlill he MakeB an Attempt ' atSuioidet wEw York, Aug. 18. Rev,' Andrew 'olville, 46 years of age, attempted to ad his life early yesterday morning by booting himself in tke mouth --with a caliber revolver in tho hallway o( home, No. 630 Sixth avenuo. After iring the shot Colville repented. With-,u- t notifying anyone he left the house, ralked to Sixth avenue, leaving a trail j blood, and proceeded to Bcllevuo tospital. When Colville reached there ,e was almost exhausted, owing to the 03 of blood.' His wound will not, the mrgeons think, prove fatal,, the bullet ijving taken an upward course, com-o-directly under the left eye, He efused to give any information g himself, except to say that fhile under the influence of liquor, he oolishly attempted, to shoot himself, 'rom letters he had on his person the rue history of tho caso carae into ight. One of the letters was as fol-ow- 'Mab Albert: Bury me In the cheapest tav The money 1b in the desk. Bend Kitty hn remainder for Lizzie and the ohildren. I lie willingly by my own hand . I blame no us My brother will attend to the burial. Signed A. Colville. On another scrap of paper the name his wife was written, addressed in are of Mrs. Kelly, on Eighth avenue, irooklyn. The address of his brother lloert was given as that of Colville & o., Thirteenth street. Three letters tere turned over to Detective Hayes, f the Tihrteenth street station, and pry little investigation showed that olville had descended from the pulpit 0 the ginmill. Colville came to this oiintry from Scotland thirty years rro. His people were well-to-d- o and he young man received a good educa-io- n and was ordained as a minister, or twelve years he had charge of the lethodist Episcopal church on Twenty-econ- d street, between First and Second venue. His conduct was entiroiv for-ig- u to that of a clergyman. He drank i) excess and was not at all particular n what places he was seen. Charges ere preferred against him and he was ried before conference, and his name as stricken from the clerical roll of he church. Colville was married three iraes, and, it is claimed, the wife in very instance was compelled to work ) support him. Up to last June Colville lived with is wife and two children on Fourth venue. Mrs. Colville was a dress-oake- r and worked hard to keep her ittle family together. Colville spent he poor woman's hard-earne- d money d drink and other idle pleasures. His onduct became so bad that the land-ed ordered him to leave tho place, lewent to the Sixth Avenue house, here he made the futile attempt to kill imself. His wife carried on the dressm-aking and her husband amused him-- f if as usual. A few days aeo she left he house with her little girls and has ot been seen since. It is supposed she i living in Brooklyn at the address re-ared to on the note found in Colville's ncket. His brother Albert is proprie-)ro- f a dress-makin- g establishment at le address in Colville's note. His of the attempted suicide was lathis brother's mind was upset by link. Colville has a brother in the linistry in Pennsylvania and another oe living in this state. De9ky's second addition will have ranid transit within sixty days. Lots sold on monthly payments. Boydton, Va., Aug. 18.-J- ohn Phil-lips, colored, aged 8S, was executed here today for the brutal murder of Capt. Robert C. Overby, a prominent citizen of this (Mecklenburg) county. Phillips, as a laborer, had to pass by Overby's house. He was very boister-ous, and Captain Overby remonstrated with him several times for using ob-scene language so near his house. This made Phillips angry, and ou the 14th of last April, when Overby remonstrated with him, he seized a heavy bludgeon and dealt Overby a blow which broke his skull, causing death. The next morning there was great indignation, and when Phillips was caught he had to be carried to Petersburg to prevent lynching. When he was brought here in May for trial he came under military escort and the troops remained ou duty in the court-roo- during tho trial. Phillips was brought here last night under a mililary guard to be executed today. The drop fell at 10:45 and Phil-lips' neck was broken. He was, prob-ably, the coolest man over seen on the galiows. He confessed his guilt and said ho was going to heaven. The exe-cution was private. CHEAP EXCURSION RATES. Take Advantage of the Rig Cut. No one has ever been able to give an authentic account of how such enor-mous quantities of beeswax came to be deposited on the beach near Nehalem. Specimens are found along the beach in various places, but it is most plentiful near the mouth of Nehaicm. As the sea shifts the bars pieces of it are washed ashore, and large quantities are found by plowing in some of the low land near the beach. There are spots where the sea has never reached in the memory of the oldest settlers, and which are cover-ed with a good sized growth of spruce, where deposits of the wax may be found by digging. Specimens of the wax may be found at the house of any settler on the beach, and to all appearances it is genuine bees-wax. Several tons have been unearthed, and, one man shipped a large amount to San Francisco once, for which he re-ceived $500. In quality it is as good as any in the market, and has retained its familiar odor through all its rough usage and age. It is supposed by some and so stated that it came from the wreck of a Spanish vessel oyer a century ago. Others say it came from a wrecked Chi-nese junk. These traditions in regard to the wrecks come from the Indians and are not reliable. It is possible this beeswax is really "lost treasure" which people are digging for on the Nehalem. The police have as yet 'umed no clew as to the whereabouts ' Put Your Hand Into Hot Metal. It is more or less true that the naked hand may be plunged with impunity into molten metal. M. Bouligny, who made a special study of what he called the "spheroidal" state of bodies, proved on his own person that it is possible to plunge the hand into molten metal and yet sustain no injury. The theory is this: The hand of the operator having been carefully moistened with a very volatile liquid, such aa alcohol or ether, is to be plunged rapidly into the molten metal; for some cases the natural hu-midity of the skin may do as well. The moisture is thrown by its sudden con-tact with the metal into tho spheroidal state, aud there is therefore no actual contact between the hand and the metal, but a thin layer of vapor is interposed between them. To make a secure fustening for the large double doors of the barn bolt a narrow bar of iron to one of the doors at its middle point Notch the ends of the bars, one on the lower and one on the upper side, to fit over iron hooks that are bolted to the door, one bending npward, the other downward. The bar moves in the arc of a circle when the doors are fastened or unfastened. This makes a secure fastening for large doors which are liable to be blown open if held only by a small hook on the inside of the same. New York Independent Englishmen Attention.
