Show "i.ooking Backward." Edward W. Bok. Edward Bellamy has perhaps never known how near he come to being left in "the shadow of oblivion." After Henery George's "Progress and Pov rty" had made its stir, enrly in the '80?, one ot the author's most Intimate friends suggested that he write a book picturing life under a realization realiz-ation of single taxers' dreams. Mr. George doubted at. Bra! the success of such a book, but at last was won over to the idea. This was just before the New Vork mayoralty campaign. In IsSb, when the George M.' Glynn excitement broke on the city. Dur-ing Dur-ing the turmoil of the convasl, and the succeeding suc-ceeding anti-poverty dissensions, the idea of the book faded from Mr. George's mind, and when a year or so later, he began to think of it again, "Looking Backward" had appeared, and one of the great chances of a life time hail pawed forever from the reach of the single-tax philosopher. |
