Show THE SPLIT MOUNTAINS from our regular correspondent vernal utah may 10 the center of interest just now in thiis this section has shifted ted from carbonate hill the home of the now famous dyer mine where everything is yet at a standstill owing to the impassable snow drifts to the split mountain district thirty miles east of vernal on green river where no little attention is directed as the work of exploration progresses which is being carried on by an incline on the fifteen cent claim under the management of lorenzo hatch who has a working bond on the property the split mountain district is peculiar in that the ore while in what is generally believed to be a sandstone formation is found in a well defined and almost perpendicular vein of three feet thickness the formation in which the vein is found is capped by a heavy belt of lime which is nothing more nor less than the southern edge of the great lime belt that extends from nit mt baldy on the west across uintah county and on for a hundred miles eastward into colorado and along the northern exposure of which is located the mines of carbonate hill grizzly mountain pot creek and douglass mountain where the bromide mine is situated when milton lyons the original locator in the new district came trudging in withe with his samples some of which were above the aver age mining men were decidedly skeptical when they learned from whence they came it was noticed however that the ore was different from any ever brought in visitors to the new find fidd confirmed lyons story of a vein with every indication of permanence and the property was finally bonded to hatch who now that the incline is in overa over a hundred feet shows no inclination to let go on the contrary it is stated by those in a position to know that the vein is as well defined as ever at that depth which is a decidedly promising feature the ore is pronounced as sulphides sulp hides with values in in copper ran ranging cring from 5 to 50 per cent with from four t to 0 ten ounces in silver and some small values in gold 6 the major part of the vein is considered low grade with frequent pockets of very verv rich ore that brings k the average up to a good pay proposition the camp is easily accessible that is that portion on the west bank of the river of late however there have been a number of locations made on the eastern ba bank of the river all of which are said to show promising indications the name split mountains was originated by Major Powell a number of years ao ago while on his famous trip of exploration down do M green river and through the grand canyon of the colorado in the interest of science it was major powells theory that the river river at some time washing against 0 the perpendicular mountain on t the he e eastern astern bank gradually all undermined it until a huge slice toppled over the water again dashing behind it and leaving leavi ng the fallen mountain on its side on the western bank if this theory is true it accounts for the vein being bein a perpendicular and would lead to the conclusion that the ore would be found in blanket form on the eastern side i As yet however nothing t has come to light that tends to confirm the theory although it seems very plausible from the general appearance of the formation expert mining 1 I opinion is generally 1 crene I rally adverse to the powell theory and characterizes the formation r as eruptive generally speaking the camp is considered promising although aside from the fifteen cent incline nothing more than surface work i has been don done 1 e the dyer company which is feeling around for new propositions in a way that indicates a tendency to branch out had a representative on the ground last week there are are others who are said to be looking in the same direction and it will not be surprising ii if a deal cames comes to light in the near future |
