Show s brigha Otillo f or ely jve dada ada db STAFF correspondence W LY NEVADA july 10 probably no E mineral bearing bea cihi section of 0 f the inter mountain west has greater gr eater prospects than has white pine county count y N nevada e vada and there is every indication that thai with further exploration and development it will become in a few years as famous as montan ls silver bow in the production of wealth from its mines the ai district strict around ely the seat of government t gov of the county of white pine is attracting tr particular attention at al the present time the camp has been fortunate indeed afla of late 1 1 te in attracting capital to the wonderful mineral mi resources found there with the result that several strong companies are conducting simultaneously an energetic campaign of development the work of exploration has been and is being conducted on a large scale and has progressed to such a point that there is no longer any doubt as to what the future of ely and its surrounding mines will be the camp of ely has passed through a series of successes and failures notwithstanding that it has been recognized since late in the as being surrounded by a vast mineral zone of exceptional merit but like almost every other mining community in the west it has suffered the consequences of inexperienced or perhaps ill advised management a condition that has often wrought disaster and ruin to mining regions that otherwise should be bustling with activity and enterprise happily for ely this intermittent spell of ups and downs seems to be at an end and its citizens see nothing but brightness ahead for them they expect to see their camp grow and become recognized everywhere as being classed among e the important ones of the country in the early history of the camp gold seemed to predominate in the ores extracted but as depth has been attained it b has as become more and ana more evident that copper will take the lead in the future nevertheless gold silver lead and platinum will figure conspicuously in the metallic output of the camp for many years to come in most parts of the district the gold ores are found on the surface and to a depth of feet when copper begins to cut an important figure in the western part of the district however the copper zones come up to the grass roots in many places with remarkably good values which bich appear to increase with depth the ely mineral belt has beeri been traced for a distance of more than eleven miles and has an average width of nearly four miles the center of the belt is intersected by a huge porphyry dyke lime forms the country rock on either side of the mineral zone alongside of which is found the lead deposits of the district granite cuts but little figure in the formations one of the solid and substantial bombina combinations which have acquired extensive holdings in the camp is the new york and nevada copper company composed almost entirely of eastern capitalists the project being fostered by this company is located in the west end of the district in what is familiarly known as the copper flat the property owned by these people is one of exceptional merit and it is confidently believed that it will equal if not excel some of the largest producers of copper that this country has ever known the surface droppings crop pings are amazingly great but the most satisfactory part of it all is the fact that so far as explorations have gone depth shows an improvement I 1 15 in the value of the ore tho th members of the company have bave demonstrated to their satisfaction that the ore deposits deposit sare are permanent more than that it is estimated that there is enough ore now in sight to keep a ton reduction plant in operation for many years to come Bac backing kino up their confidence in their ability to do this plans are a being perfected for the construction of a smelter of the capacity mentioned work upon which will commence during the present year joseph bray a veteran in nevada camps is in charge of the exploration department and not long ago it was the good fortune of a representative of the mining review to accept of his hospitality mr bray rather modestly explained that in the companas comp anys domains extending over as much as twenty two claims there is solid ore in place covering an area of eighty acres this particular part of the property has been prospected by numerous shafts from to feet in depth also by numerous open cuts on the surface it was also astonishing to know that cross cuts run on the lower levels of the mine for a distance of feet in several directions from the shaft have as yet disclosed neither the hanging or foot walls the deposit is described by mining engineers as being an intrusive dyke filled with massive bodies of copper iron and porphyry with stringers of tracy fco cutting through it promiscuously the ores on a whole are of a low grade and will be handled in large quantities in reduction they contain all the necessary elements to make them practically self fluting fluxing the company has recently acquired at a cost of some important water rights m just j ask below the town of ely which insure it a ruffic lent quantity for all purposes in the future until the camp is connected by rail with the outside world charcoal made from the mahogany timber which grows in abundance upon the mountains will be utilized in the place of coke in the process of smelting smelling sm elting A new hoisting plant capable of raising 1000 tons of ore daily is another improvement planned for the near future at the new york and nevada companes comp anys mines the mining electric co G F dunham manager owns one of the first pi oper opert ties les opened up in the camp and only the indications are that copper will predominate in the ores as barly known as boss weber one of elys most progressive citizens is one of the largest stockholders and also holds the position of secretary of the corporation some two years ago joseph L gireaux manager of senator clarks united verde mines in arizona and associates were attracted to the west end of the robinson mining district known as the pilot knob region where they obtained extensive territory from S F paul one of the pioneers of white pine county and his three sons hon frank paul george P paul and A 0 paul and others altogether this com K brur W street scene in cherry creek nevada recently completed the construction of a well equipped milling plant at a cost of about the property is located in the vicinity of the mckinley companas comp anys saxton and aultman mines in this property some very extensive bodies of gold ore have been blocked out as far down do as the foot level characteristic of this thi part of the district I 1 lim gold placer camp of osceola nevada greater depth is attained the was located by thomas rockhill 1 an old pioneer of the camp and others in 1886 just across the canyon from the is the ely mining milling companas comp anys property upon which development work is being energetically prosecuted like its neighbor across the way this mine is likely to develop into a copper producer the company owns one of the most promising propositions of the fhe camp and with further development will rank among the best the mine is equipped a 50 ton cyanide plant for the treatment of its gold ores at the present time only work of an exploration nature is being carried on under the direction of L C doty auperin the sapho mine owned largely by salt like lake and ely E ly people is another property deserving of special mention this mine has one of the finest showings in the district dl strict and a movement is is i now on foot looking toward the erection of a milling plant before the close of this year col co P C weber or per bonanza to the camp in the vicinity of pilot knob is the elk mine owned by richard A another of elys progressive citi citizens zens who is co contributing his share towards making the camp has obtained territory embracing forty four claims and at the present time is carrying on a systematic campaign of development with fa results indi eating cating that through their efforts they are to add one more cop fame with the prospect of being taken up the price agreed upon being loo the property has upon it it a fine showing of sulphide copper ores which also contain gold values of the average of 5 per ton the city of new york which adjoins the ruth group on the east is also under bond to mr peck for this property is is also a promising one on the north of the ruth is the boss of nevada mine still in an undeveloped condition but showing indications of w wr iv prosperous during the past few months mr has performed considerable development work and in addition to the new explorations pl made has again opened up lip some of the old workings where he discovered the trend of the ore body the property has 1 some excellent gold showings besides a adein vein of silver lead ore that has proven to be satisfactory to the owner assays essays running 19 8 ounces silver and 61 per cent lead have been bee n secured mr owns all boldin told in various bariou s parts of the district a total of twenty five claims some of which are located in the most favorable parts odthe of the camp among thera them ahre the peyton monarch watson west veat phelia and luitweiler weiler all of which he be alieves have great merit and will sooner or op later reveal themselves in a satisfactory manner mr keipe is also the owne eighty acres of a fine quality of building stone ston from which he expects to realize aa handsome profits the ru ruth th group lying but a short distance from properties of the mckinley company and owned by lyons grey and bart ley is under bond to W M peck of merit and is owned by rockhill and magnusen the bully boy owned by john weber and adjoining the pride of new york is virgin ground worthy of attention it has some immense droppings crop pings of gold ore which assays essays from 6 to 12 per ton with favorable favo roble copper indications cat ions the ground has the ear marks of a good mine if further developed 47 ely nune mine and min mill ely nevada the olathe group consisting of three claims lying between the ely M M co 18 s mineana mine and the sapho group and the meyer mines nos I 1 and 2 just north of the ely are other prospects which show merit also the bee hive group of five claims ow owned by K R M peters W J peters and P C weber lying between the gireaux pilot knob properties and the copper flat bonanza in foci fact there are a great many prospects in the camp that will make a good account of themselves when more money and muscle is expended upon them therefore the robinson JR district at ely is certainly an inviting place for men of wealth who are searching for mining investments that will stand exhaustive investigation so muc much hhas has been said of the mineral resources of this nevada camp that it would be unfair to pass the town of ely unnoticed although the place is now denied the privileges of railroad transportation and is miles S distant from the lines that play an important part in transcontinental traffic it is never th eless ahead in many respects of some other camps which happen to be nearer to the hi highways gh of steel it is a camp of modern times its people are intelligent and represent the highest class of citizenship the town is located in a protected spot near the mouth of the canyon through which teams pass pas daily to and fro from the mines itis it is supplied with a good volume of water for domestic and other purposes electric lights illuminate illum nate nea nearly r ly every home at night its business men are progressive and have the welfare of the camp at heart and enjoy the confidence and esteem t their customers the largest mercantile establishment is conducted by mr W B graham who loses no opportunity to promote the interests
