Show i abe be zt st aoe aab its gigantic ee j iab ego N THE carrying on of mining operations in this great intermountain region a great many conditions confront the mining man the millman and those looking for big profits in the handling of both mines and mills there are many phases of the mining industry which must of necessity be carefully studied before one can look for success in the mining world first 0 all the mine owner to be successful must be possessed of in minerals mine i n e r ralf a af bearing ground the veins must be large and strong and although of low grade the ores must possess metallic values sufficient to pay a profit after deducting all expenses of mining hauling freight smelter or milling charges together with general office expenses expense s and to reduce these expenses and charges to the minimum is a factor that largely enter i nto into the calculations of the up to date and energetic mining man As it is problem often confronts the operator in what are termed wet districts and this is a condition that boiten often stands in the way of successful mine operation although the mine owner or mining company may be possessed of a property which near the surface or above water level may have been exceedingly prolific in its production of the precious metals vt but which at a considerable depth could not be profitably worked because of an over aban dance of water to overcome over come which an expense must be entailed which would be so great that operations could no longer be continued without the balance of account showing up on the wrong side of the ledger the result being that many propositions of undeniable merit have been compelled to close down in many of our western camps and today they remain idle awaiting the time when th the e ingenuity of man shall devise ways and means for t their heir redemption and successful operation f in many jq instances stances the only feasible means 13 ow for handling propositions of this character is by deep tunneling a method in vogue in a number of our leading mining camps deep tunnels are now in favor with many of our most experienced and successful mining men and for several reasons one of which is that the long tunnel does away entirely with the water problem as this 4 k K gg a 4 V ia 4 3 r ait 4 V SOENE AT THE MOUTH OF THE ST JOE DEEP TUNNEL phase of mining drains the mine completely at t no cost whatever after aate r the completion of tb the e tunnel in addition to which it gives a cheap a and na effect effective iye outlet for ore and waste gives immense areas of aroun ground d and a thoroughfare for adjoining properties wishing to avail themselves of this privilege to save the excessive cost of boi hoisting sting and t the he unwavering watering un ina g of th their air mines bingham in W west e si mountain district is a wet camp none of its mines ines although in mag a gin n e t their heir productiveness tive ti veness nessi can hope h 0 p e to follow their ore bodi bodies es to the deep without eai encountering water in such immense quantities quantity titi es theft that operations cannot be continued without the entailment of an expense hardly rate with results obtained in the way of ores profitably mined this is an obstacle in th the 6 way of deep mining in iii west mountain district that but few have been able to overcome and many of the valuable mines of this camp will be compelled to re remain main idle antl this difficulty is overcome and overcome it eventually will be and that possibly in the near future as a strong syndicate or company is now in the field with this object in view this company or syndicate a salt lake enterprise is ia now engaged in a project for the un watering of a number of ginghams Bing hams greatest mines which is gigantic in its proportions and which if carried to a successful issue means the redemption of a number of e erstwhile r it while heavy producers and the making of millions for the stockholders of the association while at the same time the holdings of the company will be extensively developed and greatly enhanced in value the intention of the promoters of this enterprise ter prise officially known as the st joe mining company is to drive a tunnel of from two to three miles in length which will not only drain and give an outlet to its own mines but which will also answer the same purpose for owners of properties contiguous to and located along the route of the proposed tunnel in the foothill country of the southeastern portion of ginghams Bing hams great mineral belt the st joe mining company has a group of claims embracing in all about acres the property being environed on the north west wept and south by the extensive holdings of the united states mining company the dalton lark the yosemite the chicago the greek the new yosemite and the lenox mines nearly all of which have been heavy producers in the the past and which have added many millions to the worlds supply of imperishable wealth many of the claims of the company from surface workings have made enviable records in the past in the way of mineral production and considerable work has been done in their development and operation and while zones of pay ground have been opened up in the companas comp anys possessions the future rather than the present is what the management is considering and this in connection with the wonderful possibilities associated with deep tunneling has led to the adoption of the enterprise ter prise now in hand as fully outlined above in the furtherance of this project the company for the past year has been bending all its energies to the accomplishment of the end in view A tunnel has been started the mouth of which is 1400 feet below the divide on the extreme western boundary of the com banys possessions vertically along its course the initial workings being shown in the accompanying compa nying illustration as well as the engine house and other surface workings the company is equipped for drilling the Leyner drill being utilized with P gratifying success in the driving of the tunnel which is now in a distance of feet at 2800 feet from the mouth of the tunnel connection will be made with the first shaft which is being sunk from an upper tunnel on the companas comp anys ground on a 48 inch streak or body of lead silver and gold ore when this connection is made the company will install a mill of its own utilizing the concentration process of ore reduction the profits from which it is confidently believed will enable it to carry on to a successful termination the really heavy end of the enterprise the st joe deep tunnel project has been reported upon by a number of our leading mining experts and geologists and invariably they have bave pronounced it feasible and meritorious metallurgists have made exhaustive hau stive tests on ores from the companas comp anys mine and have demonstrated that they can be successfully and profitably handled by the concentrating process among experts of known standing in the mining world who have examined the companas comp anys holdings and who have thoroughly investigated the deep tunnel project might be mentioned henry M crowther late of captain J R Lamars delamare De staff and at present superintendent of the and caledonia mines at bingham in his report on the proposition mr crowther says this district is composed of a regular secrular series of paleozoic strata consisting of quartzite and lime with a notable frequency of igneous dykes which occur mostly as intercalated layers in the sedimentary strata forming as a rule the hanging wall of the contact veins the porphyries ries of the district may maybe be conveniently divided into two distinct classes viz the copper bearing and the lead bearing variety and the proximity of either certain variety to the ore bearing lime and quartzite zones determines apparently the basal metal contained in the contact veins that are within its field of influence the most notable feature of the region is the regularity and permanence of strata containing the ore bodies and their immense size when encountered the strike of strata is N E to S W with a depth of 40 degrees at surface steeper inclination as depth is gained is the general rule the zones of mineral are re ot of immense size size in st joe ground and are essentially of concentrating grades though bodies occur which promise amounts of shipping ores copper lead silver and gold are the metals encountered contained in oxidized ores ore to a depth of to feet below surface and lower than these ores lie the original sul aphides which are richer in copper and silver than ores of upper measures hence the necessity of gaining depth is evident in securing highest value ores zinc occurs with some of st joe ores and may prove a valuable byproduct by product there are seven veins containing ores of commercial value crossing crossing st joe property pr 0 erty that are known to exist as that number either outcrop or have been cut in present tunnels not to mention a portion of the famous telegraph ore zone of no small dimensions dimension which I 1 is within the st joe group west end lines 1 on all of the seven veins mentioned encouraging assay values exist and in many places considerable sid erable bodies of workable ore occurs the fire king vein in claim occupies a mineralized strata of nearly feet in width a large portion of which is fine milling ore not to mention that in the past some worth or more of shipping ore has been marketed while dumps are of good values W water ater was encountered in shaft and resulted in stoppage of operations the st joe vein is ot of great greaf lepp aj p 0 and has been prospected for a length of over half a mile sh shon owin promising value sall along in speaking of the different bipes which will be tapped by the drain tunnel alone i course mr growth er mentions the utah co soli dated highland boy which has a kiark mar et value of ten million and which will hp be tapped feet below its deepest workings Ls the boston con with millions of ore in sight which will be drained to a depth of feet below its upper workings working 8 the bingham copper gold mining companas comp anys holdings to be tapped 1100 feet below its deepest workings the property of the U united cited S states tat e 8 which has produced fifteen millions in the past which will be at its deepest workings while many other mines of known merit will be vastly bene fitted should they chose to take advantage of the opportunities opportunity tunit e to be offered by the st joe company another feature of this enterprise not yet cef alluded to is the use to which the water from the long tunnel may maybe be applied on this subject mr crowther says the amount of water the tunnel will develop I 1 place at gallons per minute which with the fall available below tunnel mouth within half a mile will provide actual H P or ample to run a ton concentrator cen while the water is sufficient to mill easily tons per day the best possible natural mill mih sites for large plants are plentiful lenti tunnel dump room is ample several inches of water has already been tapp tapped ed in the tunnel it would be an impossibility in the space for this art article acle to go into minute details as to the plans and alms aims of the company a general outline of which is given above we can state however that the project is being well received by mine owners along 11 the route of the long tunnel and that that the management of the company has received many letters of approval and commendation from those heavily interested in mining in this wonderfully rich and productive di district the enterprise is strictly legitimate in ih all of its phases and should commend itself to tb those seeking investments in mining in this rocky mountain region the company is capitalized at shares of 1 each fully paid and non assessable of which shares have been set aside for treasury purposes the officers of the company with offices office 9 in this city are B R A hasbrouck president E garey vice president wm S burton secretary and treasurer and these with henry harker and B harmon comprise the d directorate wallace W wait being the com col banys fiscal agent the officials of the company are respected and reputable citizens of salt lake and stand w well ell in financial and mining circles they can give any of our leading banks as reference to their ability and integrity |
