Show ; The J.U'anese witness a Sttr !jical Operation. Yesterday mora-iing mora-iing Dr. Hamilton amputated a leg ol 'Mr. Davies, of East canon, who was (injured some time ago by being caughl . by a cave of earth and rock in a mine. Besides several of our city surgeons, Dr. Sloan, physician and surgeon of the Japanese embassy, Kido and Ito, , ambassadors, Tanaka, chief of the de-' de-' partment of cdocation in Japan, Dr. Tukui, and some young Japanese students stu-dents of medicine, were present. The modus operandi of amputation, performed per-formed in the American style, was something new to the Japanese, and they expressed their surprise at the i celerity and skillfulness with which it was done. The wish expressed by these representatives of Japan to wit-iness wit-iness this operation, when they were informed by Dr. Sloin that it was to take place, and their close scrutiny of everything connected with it, evince how anxious they are to observe and take lessons from the superior scientific scien-tific attainments of a people once classed by them as outside barbarians Now, they cheerfully acknowledge the superiority of our civilization to theirs, in everything appertaining to science, and the skill of Dr. Hamilton has satisfied sat-isfied them, by practical demonstration, of our especial superiority in that department de-partment of scientific knowledge necessary neces-sary to the practice of medicine and surgery. |
