Show A Pitiable Case. -The case of a young man named Benjamin Edwards, is certainly a most deplorable one In crossing from Bear Lake Valley to Bear River Valley, his feet were frozen so badly, that amputation was absolutely abso-lutely necessary. He was brought by-train by-train to this city, when Judge Ea's Smith received him in this "helpless condition into his house, and is rendering render-ing Rim aH the assistance within his power. Drs. Ormsby and Davis were sent for to perform the amputations thus called for. Upoa examination, they fouud the line of demarcation wel' defined, between the living and dead parts. In order to procure a suitable flap, it became necessary to amputate at the articulation of the four front bones of the ankle-joint with the large bone and the bone of the heel, viz. by removing the Os Scaphoides, Cu-boides, Cu-boides, and the three Cuneiform bones: leaving, to form the stamp, the Os Astragalus, and Os Calcis, retaining the entire heel; thus affording an equal length in his legs, and at the same time a better cushion to Eupport the weight of the body. The operations lasted an hour and a half, and were successfully performed by Drs. Ormsby and Davis, assisted by Walter E. fike, their student. The patient rallied ral-lied well from the proloneed use of the chloroform; and, when last heard from, he was doing as well as could be expected. |
