Show CALL IT MANSLAUGHTER fledical Society and Board of Health fleet USE STRONG LANGUAGE HT R GABD TO THE WIRE AFFAIR Think the Officer Was Guilty of a Great Crime in Not Procuring Medical Treatment For His Chil dren When Suffering From Diphtheria Diph-theria Will Take Decisive Measures Meas-ures to Prevent Its Recurrence Developments in connection with the death from diphtheria of Police Sergeant Ser-geant Wires two children took a sensational sen-sational turn last night when the I board of health met jointly with the Salt Lake County Medical society and in spirit at least indorsed a resolution directing the clerk of the board to swear t a warrant charging the police po-lice sergeant with manslaughter The meeting was spirited from start to finish and there was no mincing of words It was one tremendous protest against the foolish if not criminal negligence of allowing children affected with diphtheria to die without seeking medical aid A week ago the County Medical society adopted resolutions resolving solving to assist the board of health in preventing the repetition of the I Wire affair The doctors dont believe in Christian science treatment for such a disease as diphtheria and they said so last night very emphatically There were present at last nights meeting Mayor Glendinning Health Commissioner Dalby Clerk Folland and Councilman Mulvey the latter representing rep-resenting the sanitary committee Drs Betts McLean Niles S Ewing Harrison Har-rison Fisher Ellerbeck Beer and Thorne of the medical society DELUDED PARENTS The purpose of the joint meeting was announced by the mayor and soon the debate waxed warm I couldnt fairly fair-ly be called a debate it was too one sided each one present taking turns In denouncing the Wire affair Some of the medical men went so far a to I say that any parents who would allow al-low themselves to be deluded by the j Idea that Christian Scientist treatment was all the cure necessary for their I children when taken down with diphtheria j diph-theria ought to live in Central Africa In view of the remedies now at hand I I by which diphtheria can be success fully treated the person who refused to seek this assistance i ought to be f fe eh to the fullest extent of the law Not to seek medical aid incase a in-case of this kind the physicians J termed nothing short of 5 grave crime CALLED IT MANSLAUGHTER After the discussion had waged hotly for an hour or so Dr S Ewing introduced intro-duced a resolution instructing the clerk of the board of health to swear to a complaint charging Sergeant Wire with I manslaughter Dr McLean seconded the resolution and sufficient was said to Indicate that the steps as contemplated contem-plated by the motion met with every ones heart approval But Dr Fisher thought I might be a little previous to issue a warrant for a police sergeant without consulting the city or county attorney He was heartily heart-ily in favor of prosecuting such cases but believed lesral advice should betaken be-taken first Fishers compromise after some debate met with favor from all present and a motion was passed directing di-recting the health commissioner to consult with the county attorney and the city attorney relative to any steps that can be taken to prosecute cases of this character The board of health has decided to take vigorous measures against a repetition repe-tition of the Wire affair and the city ordinances will no doubt be so amended as to alva the board power to take charge of all diphtheria and other dangerous diseases when the parents or people themselves refuse to submit to medical treatment treatent |
