Parties contemplattiigr the pur-, chase of Sewing Machine! are rq-' rq-' qneatetl to read the fol owing from the ew York "Tribune" of Oct. 19tb, ISTOt SEWI.XG MACIIINKS. We have recently had occasion to make aooie inguirie into the pruKres of improvement improve-ment in the mechiinUui of dewing machines, tnd were not a little surprised to learn thai the central idea in the first ijven.iun the shuttle still holds its place, though mny attempts bave been made to supercede it. ' The khuttle, in c-'tu binatiun with the needle, is still the u eans used to form (he stitcu. in the leading machines, and we find that the I growth of trade is chielly with the shuttle , uiibg oiachines. j The improvements that are taking firm ' hold in pructical ua are, therefore, necesa- . rily in connection with the shuttle, either , in the detail of the ehuttle itsrlf. or I in other parts of the machine connected : with it, to cause tfle whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to siiupliiy its use. Many important gains in this direction, made since the first great invention, are undoubtedly un-doubtedly embodied in the "Florence" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to carefully inspect the "i'loreiico" before making ma-king a choice. Ihe points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money id spent in matting the "Florence," thereby securing 1 the best material (steel, for instance, where ' other use cast-iron), and the. nest fin sh ot important parta (the shuttle, for example, being rigiul rejected if it varies from the stand.-rd l-2.(JLHh of an inch!) It iscon- ; strutted on theoimplet scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cgs, and cams, and link? woicb so often set perversely out ot order and sorely perples every one but ; the practiced, machinist by their unaccount- ' able freak. Ihe "Florence" is so easily: managed, and iu use is so readily learned, . that an ordinary girl of ten haa sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. Toe lockstitch, lock-stitch, as maae by the "Florence" is very ; regular and perfect, very strong and elastic, , and is drawn into the fabric evwniy, grad-1 grad-1 uall, exac.ly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; con-jeguamly, con-jeguamly, yei y tine tureads and lignt labncs ' can be used. Besides this, the ' F'lerence" tin all but the cneapest styles) also makes I three additional stitcnes a douole look, a "single knot and a double knot which are i stronger nd more elastic than any other ' stitc'h, and wmch are made by no other machine. ma-chine. Ihe "F lorence" is the only machine . tnat has a re?ertoie eed, whereby the direction di-rection of tho sewing can be instantly : oaanged without stopping the work, thus eoab.ing the operator to quilt or embroider , with unusual facility, to sew backwards and ; easily itrengthen a seam wherever desired, aod. finally, by a tew repeated stitches, to : fasten ends in the quickest and strongest : May. It is the only machine that has a telf-, telf-, adjusting shuttle-thread tension, which t works so perfectly that the operator can run facrouthe eaviest seams and sew the finest j linen and the thickest broadcloth in immediate imme-diate succession witnont breaking thethread ' and without chancing the ndie, stitch or tension. Ihe "t loreDce" draws the thread into the cloth with un equaled precision and certainty, by means ol an ingenious automatic auto-matic "take-op" wheel, which disposes of the ilack thread left after the stitch with an accurate promptness that prevents a:l snarl- tag or dropping of stitches, and allows tee 1 operator to sew backward, cr to run off the cloth and on again, with perfect impunity. It has an improved elastic hemmer, exclu- . sivel; its own, which is managed with ease, ' and will make a hem of an; width on any ' material It not only makes a per;ct gather and sews it t a band at one operation, bat it hems, and bindi, end fehs, and quilts, and coro. and mess, and giihers, and braic& without Oiptini. tuch special proriiicn is made against mjurious wear that tne "t ior once" is claimed and guaranteed by the Company Com-pany to last twice as long without repair as any other shuttle mvcine in tae market, without the (lightest d;ncalty. Every part of the "Florence-" is so perfectly and perma- 1 nently adjusted, and it h ic few joints and - points ot trier. on. that it rmii with the utmost ut-most ease. U i;d the Northwestern States and i't-rrKuries, s the most useful and complete work of the kind esuat It h- lately been revised by the author, and materially improved by the addition oi much important matter.gtTitig all the late laws aud published decisions down to lSt--This book has. up to the present lime, reached reach-ed a Urb-er sale than any other work of the kind in this country. This f.ict may be mentioned men-tioned as evidence of its superior merit. Its excellence consists both in the niauer embraced, em-braced, and the arrangement or classification classifica-tion ot" subjects. In the collection of matter containd in the wo.k it i intended t-i give all thestatute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law in connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, polio magistrate, constable con-stable or coroner will require in d:schargi ng their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference iu ordinary cases, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This will entiroly supersede the necessitv for reference to the volumes ol the statutes. 1 he arrangement of the work is methodical, methodi-cal, and f the essence ol iu value, presenting present-ing each subject in its order aud in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement is entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author has, in this work, presented the law with & clearness and simplicity of style which readers rea-ders the whole alir e plain to the common understanding as to the more advanced lawyer. law-yer. The justi'jo of the peaco, police magistrate, const ible, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instruc Lions in reg.ird to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arrange ! in convenient forx, all the statute law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated cises applicable in ordinary practice. The businessman will find in it a complete collection of forms required in the transaction transac-tion of business. Studcuts of the law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, clea: ly stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of jurisprudence. jurispru-dence. The following brief reference to the ton-tents ton-tents ot this work will afford iu some degree an idea of its peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows : Part 1.
