Show J - I j THE NEW GOVERNOR. I ! ( Utah's new Governor will soon arrive ! ' "l in our midst and assume the responsibil- ; I i ities and enter upon the discharge of the duties of the itnportan t" position to which , . ? he has been appointed. Although a ' stranger to all excent a very few of the ) , people of this Territory, the history of J , : . the man and the strong indorsement by I .. ' the entire Congressional delegation and !', ; other leading men of his State, are suf- . , j ficient assurances of his mental and -i moral qualifications for the place. The 1- ; well-known attitude of the Presi- dent towards the polygamous and treasonable Church-and-State organi- I ; zation of Utah, and his expressed I i " determination to either wipe it out of i . i existence or force the abolishment ? of its infamous methods and practices, v f j ,, j are satisfactory guarantees that his ap- 1 pointee is in accord with that policy, and s' that his Executive course will be accept- j able to the loyal people of this priest-rid- den Territory. That he will come here f: with a full determination to exert the jj Executive power to its utmost extent for i the enforcement of the laws, there is not j j ; the slight reason to doubt, and that his - policy will be as vigorous and effective as ! ' that of his predecessor, may be as con- fidently predicted. ' Being a stranger to the peculiar meth- j f ods and machinations adopted jby the Mormon leaders to accomplish their i political purposes, it is possible and even j probable that he will experience some ; difficulties at the commencement of his j; official term. No means will be omitted r by the disloyal element to blind him to I : j the true condition of affairs in the Terri- I ' ''. tory and to mislead him into the belief ' that they are a persecuted, instead of a f t law-defying, criminal, government-hating S I - people. Possessed, however, of the good j sense with which he is accredited, lie ii ' will not likely be long, misled by even f the most artfully conceived falsehoods J- i . of the skilled fabricators of Zion. It 1 1 J ,t. ( should, moreover, be the duty of all lo3'al j - persons with whom he comes in contact !''' to give him the benefit of their experi- once and observations, the better to en- j able him to lwcome fully posted in rc- l ( gard to the details as well as the general j f situation, at the earliest possible period, j ' Being a Democrat it will be quite ! natural for him to seek information and ; perhaps advice from prominent local ' members of that party. It is their duty I f , especially to furnish him with all possible 5 2i 1 information, and to impress upon him the t necessity of such rigid enforcement of 1 t the laws as will sustain the dignity of the i national Government, reflect credit upon j his party and verify the promises of the . President who appointed him. It is the J duty of all law-abiding citizens, of what- ever party, to accord the new Governor j their hearty support in his efforts to free the Territory of the foul stains of polyg- ; amy and treason ; to continue to comple- tion the good work inaugurated by his . predecessor, who was sustained, encour- " aged and supported as heartily and effectually by the party to which Gov-j Gov-j . ernor West belongs as by his own politi- cal adherents and sympathizers. We i ; hope and believe that the Republicans (generally will pursue a similar unpartisan and patriotic course. |
