Show i THE BURGLARS IX LIMBO. i - Sir. Carter's Stolen Goods Hccov-i Hccov-i credA Gang of the Thieves. ! This afternoon almost the entire quan-i quan-i tity of pistols, opera glasses, etc.,. which were stolen from Thomas Carter's gun store were recovered. They were found in one of the rooms in the Denver & Rio Grande Hotel, near the depot, and the discovery was made by the proprietor of the house, Mr. Jas. Higney, obtaining a peep into the room through a back window. win-dow. His suspicions had been aroused j by the action of two men who occu- pied this and the adjoining room yesterday. When the chambermaid chamber-maid went to clean and "do up" the room, they told her that this particular particu-lar room required no cleaning up; that it would do as it was ; and they retained the key. Mr. Higney after making his discovery went to the City Hall and notified noti-fied the officers, but before the latter could act in the matter Mr. Carter's book-keeper, Mr. John Woodmansee, who had already learned from other sources of the whereabouts of the articles, had communicated com-municated his knowledge to Deputy Franks, and the two went immediately and took possession of the goods. There was found to be forty-five pistols, twelve pairs of opera glasses, all of the missing meerschaum goods and the wolfskin rug. Mr. Carter thinks this leaves but one valuable pistol, and perhaps per-haps one or two other valuable articles, still missing. The police, as well as the deputies, had now got sufficient clue to the identity of the guilty parties to admit ad-mit of a general search, and within a very few minutes after the recovery of the goods, Mr. Makin, the one-armed cobbler who has several coal properties in the Castle valley country, was brought into the City Hall along with another man, who Makin claimed was his brother. The deputies also ran in three of the supposed sup-posed gang, 'while officers Thomas and Clayton went in mounted pursuit of three more who were seen going down the State road this morning. This trio are supposed to be the really guiltv ones, as they are the parties who had the goods secreted at the D. & R. G. Hotel. Thev were seen at the saloon adjoining the hotel last night about 9 o'clock, but did not occupy their rooms of the night before. These same parties first aroused suspicion yesterday when one of them was seen carrying two rifles near the depot. Special Officer Thomas Daniels, who is watchman at the depot, noticing this suspicious circumstance, followed fol-lowed the men around until they appeared to suspect his object, when they got out of the way. The presence of these men with the three guns near the depot became be-came known to Deputy Gleason, and this officer went at once to Carter's store and enquired if there had been anv rifles stolen. Mr. Carter gave the opinion that there had not been, and this threw Deputy Gleason completely off the track, otherwise he could have had the parties safely under arrest as early as 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. These three worthies, learning learn-ing that their movements were being watched, attempted this morning to leave town and were seen going down the State road before noon. It was expected that officers Thomas and Clayton would overtake and capture them without mncli Kffi,nHT. u4- nothing had been heard from them when the Democrat went to press. Marshal Ireland's deputies think that there is an organized gang of the fellows, and it is supposed that the secretary sec-retary of the crowd is now in the Marshal's Mar-shal's custody. Policeman Salmon is of a different opinion, however, and believes that the three men who left the goods at the hotel are the only parties par-ties to the steal. The others who were arrested will be held, however, and examined ex-amined before they are released, as it is I claimed that they were concerned in the burglary. Somebody familiar with the whole business is supposed to have given the information away to Mr. Wood-mansee Wood-mansee or Deputy Franks, but who it is is not known. At all events Mr. Carter, the officers and the people are to be congratulated con-gratulated on the results, and it is to be hoped that the other fleeing criminals will be overtaken and forced to take their merited punishment. |
