Show I I DYNAMITE POWDER IN THE WEST L i i Annual Consumption of Nearly 5OOOOOO Pounds Ain Raise A-in Price A DEMOCRAT reporter met Mr Julian L Sontag of the Safety Nitro Powder Com panyof San Francisco this morning upon his arrival in the city In answer to I questions regarding the pool entered into by all the large powder manufacturers of I the United States Mr Sontag said that in the pool governing the sale of all powder pow-der sold west of the Missouri river embracing em-bracing what is known as the neutral I belt covering the State of Colorado and L the Territories of New Mexico Utah and I Montana the traveling salesmen have t j i been withdrawn all companies being under the direct control Qf a standing j committee of seven directors located in I j San Francisco Under the existing arrangements the t powder used in this section is only obtained ob-tained through local agents comprising the firms of Remington Johnson Co for the Safety Nitro GeoJrgoAT Scott for the Hercules and Cunnington Co tor I the Giant A now schedule of selling prices for the neutral belt was adopted I August 21st 1885 with a raise of about 10per cent in prices Considerable feeling feel-ing has been manifested f n the part of r the mining public on ucccunt of what they term exorbitant prices Lt this raise t was not made with any view to oppress the mining interests but was brought about by reason of the increased cost of nitre and glycerine most of which is I imported This readily shows the buyer how the T atse came about in t o price f I dynamite powder The price of nitre S has been increased at least 33 percent per-cent within the past thirty days while the manufactures have increased the price of powder but 10 per cent The sales are about the same as or the past I three years although the lack of railroad building has somewhat decreased the consumption of the explosive About five million pounds of dynamite power are used annually west of the Missouri Mis-souri river Mr Sontag will tarry among his many Salt Lake acquaintances for a week and then move forward to the States |
