Show THE UTAH COMMISSION. A Humor That General AlcClernand Will Be Appointed Its President. The following Washington dispatch has not yet found its way into the Associated Press report : Washington, January 8. There is a strong robability that General MoClernand, of pringfield, 111., will reoeive the appointment appoint-ment of Presidentof the Utah Commission. Some months ago Mr. Tilden wrote a letter to the President, in which he stated that, while he had no favors to ask of the Administration,- he was especially desirous that General McClernand should be provided for. He recounted at some length his valuable services to the Union cause, and dwelt with much earnestness upon the fact that past administrations had given the go-by to General Gen-eral McClernand because of his persistent adhesion to Democratic principles. It is well known that in compliance with Mr. Tilden's request the President was disposed to have appointed General McClernand Internal In-ternal Revenue Collector for the Springfield district, but about that time Congressman Springer presented a candidate for that position, po-sition, and for the time-being McClernand was put aside. But the President has not forgotten General McClernand's claims upon the Democracy nor Mr. Tilden's request, since he to-day informed an Illinois politician poli-tician that General McClernand should be speedily and acceptably provided for. In this connection the President suggested the availability of General MoClernand for the Presidency of the Utah Commission, and there is no doubt of his appointment. |
