Show Scientific loafers The American Association for the advancement 1in vancement of Science which has been holding a series of meetings at Ann Arbor Ar-bor adopted a resolution recognizing the valuable work done by the United Stater Coast Survey and deprecating the judgment judg-ment of such work by other than scientific scien-tific men which was evidently aimed at I the Government In tho ordinary course I of business in the Treasury Department Secretary Manning discovered that the I coast and geodetic surveys had been managed for long timo on the goasyou please plan and a brief inquiry sufficed to convince him that the people were paying for a great deal of science which they did not get He made no pretense of being a scientific man himself but he I knew enough about business to perceive that men drawing 3000 or 4000 a year for loafing around Washington were altogether too well paid considering the times Without endeavoring to fathom the abstruse problems which these learned doctors were in the habit of solving Mr Manning simply Bed mo m B-ed the salary list and the product of the office in the way of science and incontinently i inconti-nently lopped off the official heads of about a dozen of the most inveterate leeches l in the government service His I understanding of science may not be as profound as is desirable but no one can deny that he gave the barnacles in that I particular branch of the governmental machine a most scientific polishing off It would bo a good idea for the Associa I tion for the Advancement of Science to transform itself for a short period say thirty or forty years into an Association for the Encouragement of Common Hon I ost and Horse esty Sense Unscientific persons per-sons can tell loafers and parasites when I they see them as well as other people Chicago Herald 31st nIt I |
