Show strife A law of nature the following is a portion of a lecture delivered in salt lake the other day by pres J T kingsbury of the state university we print it because its value as a brief survey of the fundamental laas laws that govern human activities these propositions are hard for him who believes that we shall have a heaven on earth in any reasonable time following is the part of the lee lecture defered to opposition conflict or war throughout the world seems to be more in accord with nature than dogo does peace the underlying forces in nature are constantly opposed to and in conflict with one another gravitation is opposed to centrifugal and even molecular forces are in conflict with one another one kind of force is striving to hold the molecules together while another kind is working against the aggregation of the molecules chemical forces are in conflict with one another and constantly oppose one another among the atoms of matter one force constantly overcomes another nother which is the victor and which the vanquished depends upon the conditions present in the destruction of one thing there is the production of another ano thep it would seem therefore with reference to these forces that in order that any object at all can be produced there must be the destruction of something else through these invisible forces permeating the universe certain worlds and heavenly bodies are destroyed while others are made one substance ilis destroyed while another is evolved in other words as one thing is dying another is being born bom in death there is life destruction is a process of production among the living beings there is turmoil one class fighting and laboring to destroy another and this struggle is ii incessantly going on this same strife is found among the lower animals this constant conflict among these living things may be due to hunger or in some cases to an antagonistic feeling and it may be simply in conformity to nature and impossible to be otherwise man from his first beginning on this earth has been warlike in nature and off and on at att T all times in a state of physical or strife the remains and evidences of prehistoric man point to conflicts and struggles in those early times and lead one to believe believe that the human race in primeval days was belligerent beli gerent by nature in history we find man in the oldest communities on the earth and in all times up to the present fighting first for one thing and then for another sometimes for territory and power at other times for freedom revenge but mostly on account of greed selfishness and hatred there is not only strife among what are called the dead forces in nature and the physical forces among living beings but there is also a struggle going on between the ideas of one man and those of another among even the various ideas that come up in of the single individual one finds himself often carrying carrein g on a warfare within himself and in many instances it is impossible to reconcile the different ideas or opinions he be himself entertains the world the universe is never free from conflicts strife opposing forces and doubtless never will be among what are called the dead forces pr evading all space and possibly among many of the lowest force force of living liking beings there will probably always be strife from the very nature of things but among men as civilization advances and as the higher ideals and the spirit of divinity come more and moor to prevail turmoil and bodily strife will grow less and less and finally cease strife and 0 position opposition P however even alonz amorico members of the human race will forever exist but it will be strife and opposition among the ideas of dpn finally finall Y however through the triumph of that divine nature with which ch man is endowed not only will physical or struggles amota members of the tinman race finally cease but es of aninion and conflict of ideas will bacome cleasur abla and man will learn to work and live in peace record |
